Penn State vs. Indiana Pick – NCAAF Week 11

The Penn State Nittany Lions have a renewed sense of, how should I put it, a winning culture? That may be a bit premature, but at 7-2, and the Jerry Sandusky behind them, Penn State looks poised to become a competitor in the BIG 10 again. They aren’t going to be taking a bite out of the top dogs anytime soon, including Michigan and Ohio State, but they should get back to being a team who can at least compete for a conference championship. Michigan State has gone in the toilet, at least this season, Wisconsin has been good but certainly beatable, so there is a nice window for Penn State to get up there as a top 3 team. And yes, I do know that Penn State beat Ohio State this season, but overall, the Buckeyes are a better team and are still a team they are going to be behind in the near future. Penn State cannot take Indiana lightly this afternoon, or a lot of confidence in them is going to be gone if they lose.

Indiana, for all of the failures they’ve had for the last decade or so, I suppose you could say a record of 5-4 is an improvement for them. They have their eyes set on a bowl win for the first time since 1991! Yes, believe it or not, Indiana hasn’t won a game since 1991, a 24-0 win against Baylor in the Copper Bowl, which is now known as the Cactus Bowl. They nearly ended that winless streak last season, but lost a wild one to Duke in the Pinstripe Bowl. I remember than one pretty well, considering I had money on the game. Duke ended up edging Indiana out for a final score of 44-41 in overtime. When you haven’t won in a bowl game in that long, it’s more of a big deal for them to win one than it is for other schools.

With a record of 5-4, the Hoosiers can become bowl eligible with a victory today. They’ll need to find one more win by the end of the year if they want to extend their season to the postseason. Is that too much to ask? Well, by looking at their schedule, they have Penn State, Michigan, and Purdue remaining. They are underdogs to the Nittany Lions this afternoon. Michigan looks like a sure loss, and Purdue could be a toss-up. Penn State are ready to show the country that they are for real. It’s the 10th ranked Penn State Nittany Lions taking on the unranked Indiana Hoosiers early Saturday afternoon.

Penn State vs. Indiana Pick:

Penn State are a quiet 7-2. Even after the Ohio State win, the perception with this team was kind of like, yeah yeah they caught the Buckeyes in a bad spot. Like I said, Ohio State are the better team, but the Buckeyes really needed that game. They would be, without a doubt, in the top 4 if they didn’t lose to Penn State. There would have been some debate, notably between Washington, but an undefeated Ohio State team bests an undefeated Washington team. The Buckeyes’ loss is Washington’s gain. A lot of things could change between now and the next few weeks, so we’ll see how everything plays out. With two losses, Penn State are out of the picture. And playing in the same division as Michigan and Ohio State is not the easiest draw.

To play in the BIG 10 Championship, Penn State will have to jump Michigan and Ohio State. Not happening. Even in the foreseeable future, it’s going to be difficult to find a way ahead of them. The way Michigan and Ohio State recruit, they are in tough. Nevertheless, Penn State should get to a quality bowl game this season. They tremendous production from all facets of the offense. Penn State has improved without Christian Hackenberg, so that just shows you what is going to be of his NFL career. Penn State quarterback, Trace McSorley, has passed for 14 touchdowns with only 3 interceptions. He hasn’t thrown an interception in six weeks, since September.

The running game has been looking good as well, they’ve averaged 183.4 yards on the ground. There are no issues with the defense, too. The most positive I take from the Nittany Lions, though, is how they kept on rolling after beating Ohio State. Some teams fade off, but Penn State are currently on a five-game winning streak, blowing the doors of Purdue after the Ohio State game and then blowing Iowa out. Penn State should be too much to handle for Indiana today. They barely beat Rutgers and Maryland the last two weeks. That isn’t going to work against Penn State. I see a 38-27 win or so on the horizon for Penn State here.

PICK: PENN STATE -7 (-110)
