Rutgers and South Florida, a pair of 4-3 teams, look to battle it out in the Big East on a rare Wednesday night kickoff. The Bulls, coming off of an impressive 38-30 road victory at Cincinnati last out, welcome a Rutgers team that was hammered by 20 points (@ Pitt) last week. The Bulls are 10.5 point favorites in a game that could go a long way to getting either side into decent bowl position. While USF may be the double-digit favorite, it is the visiting Scarlet Knights who have won four in a row in the series. Last year’s game won’t be forgotten as Rutgers, as only 1.5 point favorites, ran out 31-0 winners. While things may look like a reversal in form is due and South Florida should win, don’t necessarily count your chickens.

Rutgers offense has been bad (109th nationally in yardage, 97th in scoring) but they’ve at least been consistent. Consider: in Rutgers’ last three outings they’ve scored 27, 23, and 21 points, respectively. With that, they know what their offense can give them. South Florida comes in with a good scoring defense (20th nationally) so expecting Rutgers to score in the high 20’s may be a tad optimistic but scoring somewhere between 17 and 24 points is about right. With that said, can their defense slow South Florida down? The easy answer is yes. South Florida’s offense has troubles of its own (95th in total yardage and 71st in scoring) but what they did last week (38 point on road to Cincinnati) simply cannot be ignored. Either way, it should make for interesting viewing.
South Florida is a team that—as Forrest Gump might say— “is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re going to get.” While it’s reasonable to expect some of the vaunted South Floridian speed to permeate the skill positions, there is no denying there has been trouble this year. The Bulls, before their foray against Cincinnati last week, could only manage 15 points in two games against fellow Big East foes West Virginia and Syracuse. What team will show up tonight: The one last week? Or the one from USF’s last home game (a 13-9 loss to Syracuse)?

Rutgers vs. South Florida Prediction for Week 10:
Spread Prediction (Top Play) – There are so many different things that can happen in this game but something we certainly don’t expect is a shootout. But, Rutgers’ offense has been anemic as of late that it is difficult to see them lighting up a South Florida defense that has only surrendered 42 points in their home games (4) this season. Rutgers will score at some point but they won’t be dipping into the 30’s. South Florida’s offense had an explosion last week and it’s right to expect them to move the ball here and there with their team speed. With that said, we’ll go with USF.
Game Total Prediction –42 points in a college football game really isn’t a whole lot. The number here isn’t because of two great defenses. As aforementioned, it’s more of two mediocre/ below average offenses. While South Florida can score some points, there aren’t lighting it up.. Neither team has a good rush offense so expect some passing and some punts throughout the way, which makes the game longer. With more game time expect the teams to just creep over the 42 line. The over is 7-3 in the past 10 matchups between the two sides. We’ll go with that.
