Saints vs Patriots Spread Prediction and Odds for 2010 Preseason Game

The defending Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints and the New England Patriots will kick off their 2010 NFL Pre Season with a showdown tonight – Thursday, August 12th. The game is set for 7:30 PM EST and will take place at Gillette Stadium in New England.

Last season the Saints went 13-0 in their first 13 games of the regular season, before dropping their next three to end the regular season with a 13-3 record, which was good for a first round bye in the NFC. The three straight losses to end the season didn’t stop their momentum; as they went on to beat the Arizona Cardinals in their NFC divisional playoff game. New Orleans went on to beat the Vikings in the NFC Championship game and had a date with the Colts in Super Bowl 44. The Saints came into the game as 6 point underdogs, but went on to upset the Colts 31-17 giving New Orleans their first ever Super Bowl.

The Patriots finished last season with a 10-6 record, as they managed to make the AFC playoffs, something they hadn’t done in the 2008 NFL season. With a first round playoff match up against the tough Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Wild Card game, the Patriots saw themselves down 24-0 early and ended up losing by a score of 33-14 for an early playoff exit.

Saints vs Patriots Prediction:

Spread/Money Line Prediction – The New Orleans Saints won their meeting with the Patriots last year easily, by a score of 38-17. Drew Brees will see minimal action in this first week preseason game, but looks to do some damage in the one or two series he will play. Preseason games usually come down to the depth of the team, and I like the Saints QB depth. Chase Daniel will likely see some time for the Saints at quarterback, along with Patrick Ramsey, both who I think are capable of putting up solid performances. The Patriots have had quite a number of changes during the off season and I am not sure they will be as sharp as normal tonight. I like the Saints as slight underdogs in tonight’s Saints vs Patriots match up. PREDICTION – SAINTS TO WIN ON THE MONEY LINE (+110).

Game Total Prediction – If this was a regular season game we would probably see a total in the high 40’s or low 50’s, but because Brees and Brady will see limited time the odds makers have set the total at 35 for tonight’s game. Both offenses have some depth, including the Saints receiver core which will have some solid players out there for the majority of the game. I like this game making it over the posted total. PREDICTION – OVER 35 POINTS (-110).
