Texas vs. Iowa State Pick – NCAAF Week 5

The Texas Longhorns get back on the field this week for a Thursday night matchup with the Iowa State Cyclones. Big game for the Cyclones, and likewise, a big game for the Longhorns. Texas is still trying to get rid of the image and perception they received after getting ran off the field in Week 1 against Maryland.

From there, a lot of trust went out the window with Tom Herman right off the bat. Well, with respects to fans who love to jump to conclusions from one game or a week. Any reasonable fan would know not to jump on Herman right away. Nevertheless, Texas’ fans have suffered long enough and are thirsty for a winning football program. That effort took the air out of the Herman welcome party.

They came out and demolished San Jose State the following week by a score of 56-0. The Longhorns put it all on the line against USC, but came up short, 27-24, at the Coliseum in overtime. Hard loss, but solid effort by Texas on the road in a tough environment.

If there was anything to take from that game, it’s that the defense improved ten-fold since Week 1 against Maryland. The Terrapins are not what anyone would consider an elite offense, so it was especially bad giving up 51 points. Whatever changes they made worked, as the defense was giving Sam Darnold and the potent USC running attack issues all night.

Iowa State has been putting up points on the board this season. Everyone has been working in unison and playing good football. The Cyclones enter with a record of 2-1 with wins over Arkansas and Northern Iowa. Their loss was a hard fought battle against Iowa, a 44-41, in overtime. Is Iowa not as good as they looked against Penn State? Or is Iowa State really that good? Find more below, and get our free Texas vs. Iowa State pick to get Week 5 of college football started.

Texas vs. Iowa State Pick:

The Iowa State offense has been performing this season. They’ve looked much better over the first three days of 2017 than they did the last three years combined. In his second-year at the commands, quarterback Jacob Park has looked sharp, passing for 8 touchdowns and 2 interceptions, along with a 66.7 completion percentage. Over just three weeks, he’s nearly matched his touchdown total of 12 touchdowns a year ago.

The Iowa State offense has scored 42, 41, and 41 points thus far. Scoring 44 on Northern Iowa isn’t impressive, but rattling off 41 against Iowa and Arkansas isn’t an easy chore. Iowa made a very good Penn State offense look off for most of the night this past Saturday. The running game led by David Montgomery has had a high-rate of success, too. Montgomery has run for 322 yards with a 5.8 average per carry. If the Longhorns come out and play defense like they did against Maryland, forget it, there will be a mini-upset tonight.

A bye week came at a perfect time for Texas. The offense was looking stale without Shane Buechele starting. Defenses were not respecting Sam Ehlinger to throw the ball, so they stacked the box and shut the running game down. It was simple to defend. However, Buechele has been practicing with the first-team this week and appears ready to get his starting job back. Iowa State will have to respect the passing game if that’s the case. When he’s clicking, Buechele can be good. I spot a total here that is a few points too low. If I were an odds maker, it’d be somewhere at 66.5 or 67. With that said, I recommend a play on the OVER.

PICK: OVER 63 (-110)
