Tulsa vs. SMU Pick – NCAAF Week 9

Tulsa travels to Texas for a Friday night meeting with the SMU Mustangs. SMU have been playing great football, and have some NFL prospects on their roster. There is talent to be had on this team, more so than I’ve seen since the Mustangs were dealt the death penalty. They aren’t going to be competing for a National Championship, but the Mustangs are heading for a bowl game and competing for the AAC. The AAC is the best conference that no one cares about. You have Central Florida, South Florida, SMU, Navy, and Memphis. All those schools are playing good football, and could spring an upset against bigger competition, under the right conditions.

I didn’t include Tulsa on that list. They are a 2-6 football team, and played a horrendous game last week against UConn. The same UConn team who ranked last in defense with regards to yards allowed per game. All Tulsa could facilitate was 14 points on the road against a bad Huskie team. If you were to tell me UConn was going to score just 20 points, I would have put more on Tulsa. Now, the Golden Hurricane have a major problem with 3-7 staring them in the face.

This is the first year Tulsa has been searching for a quarterback in quite a while. A quality quarterback always seemed to fall in their laps. But this season has been different, they’ve been rotating between two quarterbacks with just about the same result. Tulsa is supposed to be a fast paced, hurry it up score a lot of points offense. However, too many times this season they have looked lost offensively. That starts and ends at quarterback for Tulsa. We’ll see how they manage on Friday night in Texas. Tulsa vs. SMU Pick:

Tulsa have been experimenting at quarterback with Luke Skipper and Chad President. Skipper, a freshman, replaced President for the last two weeks, but I don’t know what they do now after a couple of poor performances from Skipper. Skipper was awful against one of the worst defenses in college football, passing for just 259 yards with an interception and no touchdowns. He has amassed 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions on 61.3 percent passing. President holds similar numbers, so it’s pick your poison at the moment. I think Skipper being the freshman, Tulsa just wants to get him some experience, rather than take their lumps with President.

The Golden Hurricane are not built as a pass-happy offense, contrary to popular opinion. They like to run the football effectively to set the pass up. They did it quite effectively with Dane Evans at quarterback. However, now with no capable quarterback, defenses are simply stacking the box and begging Tulsa to beat them through the air. The problem is, they don’t have a quarterback capable of taking advantage of these looks on the defensive side.

SMU is led by the ultra-talented receiver, Courtland Sutton. Sutton will be taken highly in the upcoming draft, as he is a top wide receiver prospect. He has a unique combination of size and speed that is tough to find in college. Sutton currently has 570 yards and 9 touchdowns. If you haven’t watched him yet, pay attention to him in this one against Tulsa. The Mustangs are 13th in the nation, averaging 496 yards per game, along with 42 points a game. I don’t see how Tulsa competes here with their sudden deficiencies on offense. SMU should be able to pull away for a win and cover on the spread.

PICK: SMU -9 (-110)
