The Tulsa Golden Hurricane will look to keep the party going this week, after they blew out Houston by a score of 45-17 last week. Tulsa went in as 14-point dogs, but came out as 28-point winners. It’s no small task to rack up the points against a defense like Houston, but Tulsa diced through them like it was nothing. Tulsa needed the win in a big way, as they were on a four-game losing streak heading into the contest. Likewise, UConn were on a four-game skid before snapping it last week against Temple. Not nearly as impressive of a win, as the Owls have been an ugly football team in 2017. Tulsa and Connecticut are both two-win football teams heading into Saturday.
Their goals of winning a conference championship are out the window. Neither are going to unseat UCF, USF, or Navy for that matter in the standings. The AAC is a highly competitive conference this year, and Tulsa and UConn are not up to the task. It’s going to make for an exciting last few weeks in this conference, but we can forget about these two being in the mix. Nonetheless, a bowl game could be in reach. Any bowl committee would be happy to have a team like Tulsa who has plenty of offense in their game.
The offense found its rhythm last week against a good defense. It was sputtering for a few weeks, so it was a surprise for them to spring to life like they did. The offense had enough with Chad President at quarterback, and now they’re giving Luke Skipper the keys. Skipper has been better than President, but it was the running game who led the way in the 45-17 victory. Tulsa ran for 288 yards, asserting their will vs a talented Houston defensive line. The Golden Hurricane have a good offensive line, and they were on full display a week ago. They don’t get nearly the same test this week, but it’s important not to relax and brush UConn off. Tulsa vs. UConn Pick:
Tulsa and UConn may just have 2 wins, but Tulsa has been the better 2-win team. The Huskies haven’t come close in a lot of instances, including a horrendous 70-31 effort against Memphis. Prior to that, they were blown off the field by SMU, 49-28. Their biggest win this season was against Holy Cross, and that was only by 7 points, 27-20. That should have been a 30 or so point win. Their next biggest win came against a bad Temple team. The chances of Connecticut beating a winning football program in 2017 is pretty slim. A win against Tulsa would be their biggest of the year.
The Golden Hurricane have wins over UL Lafayette and Houston. They also came up close against a good Toledo and Navy team. While UConn has been getting played with physically and mentally, Tulsa have been playing competitive football. Tulsa can run the football extremely well behind their strong offensive line. The Golden Hurricane are 11th in the nation, rushing for a whopping 271.1 yards per game. If only Skipper can get it going at quarterback, Tulsa could make some noise.
UConn are 70th against the run, allowing 166 yards per game. This also could be a nice opportunity for Skipper to get in a groove. The Huskies are the clear loser against the pass in college football. They are dead last, 130th, allowing just under 400 passing yards per game. A decent high school quarterback would find yards against this UConn defense. I think the spread in this matchup is a bit too low. Like I said, they are both 2-win teams, but one has looked much more impressive than the other. I will take Tulsa to win by at least a touchdown on Saturday afternoon.
