UL Lafayette vs. Arkansas State Pick – NCAAF Week 8

We didn’t have any Wednesday night Sun Belt action last night, but we have a Sun Belt, followed by a AAC matchup on Thursday night. Looking forward, I don’t see any Wednesday night games in the next couple of weeks. The MAC will begin playing on Tuesday night’s, beginning on Halloween. In other words, at the conclusion of the World Series. I’m welcome to more football during the week, as it presents more opportunities. I’ve actually been killing the lower-tier weekday action, so I don’t mind at all. I hope to keep it going on Thursday night with another Sun Belt winner. We hit a winner on UL Lafayette last week, as they embark on another weekday matchup on Thursday.

UL Lafayette will be on the road this week on the campus of Arkansas State University. Arkansas State have already had their bye week and are 3-2 on the year. Conversely, the Ragin Cajuns are 3-3 after beating Texas State last week. Texas State are one of the worst teams in the nation, if not the worst, so UL Lafayette almost had the week off. Nevertheless, going on the road against an inferior team can always present a trap situation. UL Lafayette avoided the trap, and are on the road again in Week 8.

The Ragin Cajuns and Red Wolves are an important matchup here in Week 8. It may not look like much to us, but at 3 wins, the notion of finding a bowl game is going to come up down the stretch. For UL Lafayette and Arkansas State, getting an invite to any bowl game is a privilege. 6 wins should be enough, considering they hand out invites to 5-win teams these days. If there are enough teams at 6 wins, though, it’s tough for a 6-win Sun Belt team to make it. 7 wins is a lock. Both are very well alive in the hunt for the Sun Belt Championship too, especially Arkansas State.

Arkansas State have been hot lately, beating Georgia Southern, 43-25, and Coastal Carolina, 51-17. That really isn’t the stingiest of opponents, but the Red Wolves have played a couple of decent schools, Nebraska and SMU. They came close against Nebraska, dropping a 43-36 decision in Nebraska. Arkansas State has also played a few creampuffs, including the two mentioned above, and Arkansas-Pine Bluff. It’s a big matchup in the Sun Belt on Thursday night. UL Lafayette vs. Arkansas State Pick:

UL Lafayette were sleepwalking against Texas State yet managed to win 24-7. The Ragin Cajuns pulled away in the 4th quarter to secure a win by a comfortable margin. The Arkansas State offense has been motoring of late, scoring 94 points the last two weeks. The offense is propelled by quarterback Justice Hansen. He’s already matched his touchdown mark from last year and it’s only October. Hansen has passed for 19 touchdowns and 6 interceptions. Last season he threw 19 touchdowns and 8 interceptions, so he’s going to smash that total.

Arkansas State are 35th in the nation with 455 yards per game. They’re also scoring at a high clip with 40 points per game. The offense revolves around Hansen. They’re 10th in the nation in passing yardage per game with 331.4 yards. If you can shut their passing game down, there is going to be a good chance at beating them. Arkansas State are 108th in the country running the ball. Look for Hansen to air it out in this one.

UL Lafayette are allowing 420.8 yards per game for 89th in the country. They are 81th in college football defending the pass. This is after playing one of the worst offenses in the FBS. I think everyone is going to remember what the Ragin Cajun did last week and think it’s going to translate to this week. Additionally, they had Idaho the week before, so this is going to be a monumental difference on Thursday night. I took Lafayette and we hit easily last week, but that was more of a fade of Texas State than anything. Hansen and company turn up the heat and get a big win over the Ragin Cajun.

PICK: ARKANSAS STATE -12.5 (-110)
