USC vs. Oregon Pick – CFB November 21st

This is matchup of two underachievers this season. Mind you, USC could trade in their Trojans name for the USC Underachievers because it’s the same thing every year at USC. They are on the right track after firing head coach Steve Sarkisian. He was fired after showing up to practice drunk. That scenario may have been a blessing in disguise for USC because I never liked Sarkisian as a coach anyway. I thought the hire was bizarre when they made it and thought it was bizarre up to his drinking episodes. USC needs a proven winner in there to get them back to being a national contender. Because right now, averageness isn’t getting it done at USC. They haven’t really been a relevant team since the Reggie Bush era.

Early in the season this was looking like some kind of matchup. USC and Oregon going at it for PAC 12 supremacy. With both schools at 7-3 they are looking at reaching the top of their divisions and finding a way in the championship game. USC already blew out Utah so they have the tiebreaker over them. Oregon will have to jump Washington State and Stanford for the North. Washington State has what looks like a gift against Colorado tonight, so they have some work to do.

USC has the chance to turn a topsy-turvy season into something good, though. Win the PAC 12 and a bleak season turns into a good season. That won’t get them to the final 4 college football playoff, but a conference championship and solid bowl game would be a nice way to conclude the year. USC needed to claw and fight to get by Colorado last week, a 27-24 win. However, they are still on a four game winning streak, so despite the struggles they’ve been playing well lately.

Oregon has turned into a different team since the return of Vernon Adams. He had to sit out for a few weeks with a broken hand, and it was clear, Oregon dearly missed him. The Ducks bounced between backups and never got much out of Jeff Lockie who was originally competing with Adams for the starting role following Marcus Mariota’s departure. Adams is on a four game winning streak at the controls, his latest coming against Stanford, a big win. During that four game stretch, Adams and the Oregon offense averaged 42.25 points a game. A good afternoon matchup on the docket in the PAC 12 on Saturday.

USC vs. Oregon Pick:

It’s been a serious of runs for USC this season. They started off nicely and then fell off considerably after a loss to Stanford. In two of the next three weeks following the Stanford game they lost to Washington and Notre Dame. Washington completely shut them down on offense, holding them to 12 points in a 17-12 Washington win. The next week USC couldn’t keep up with Notre Dame, losing that one 41-31. The Trojans then went on to win four straight. So yes, it has been topsy-turvy at USC this season. A win over Oregon would be a nice though, though, to keep the good run going. Cody Kessler will be getting the first start of his career at Oregon. He is having a phenomenal season for USC, passing for 23 touchdowns and 6 interceptions. With the three losses on his resume in 2015, the quality season he is having is being overlooked. USC has scored an average of 36.4 points per game with Kessler under center.

Oregon gives up a lot of points through the air. They’re allowing 317.7 yards per game against the passing game. In fact, Oregon has also has troubles against the run, surrendering 173.6 yards per game. This all adds up to a defense that has given up a lot of points and yards. The Ducks this season have given up 37.1 points per game. I do see Kessler taking advantage of the Oregon secondary. An interesting note in this game, Vernon Adams is playing against his childhood team. He even has a SC logo tatted on his arm. He said it doesn’t stand for USC, but the tattoo is the traditional SC trademark. In any case, I see Adams having a big game as well. Oregon gives up a lot of points, but they are scoring 41.8 points per game and looking much better with Adams starting. Look for some points, with the OVER 72.5 cashing.

PICK: OVER 72.5 POINTS (-110)
