The Mountaineers come into the game perfect at 3-0 on the season. They cruised to a 31-17 win over Maryland last week and covered the 10 point spread. The game came on the heels of a 24-21 miraculous comeback win in overtime against Marshall the previous week. West Virginia was favored by 12 in that game and obviously failed to cover. WVU is 1-2 ATS this season but looked to have it together last week against the Terps. QB Geno Smith was on fire hitting on 19 of 29 passes for 268 yards and 4 touchdowns, without an interception. Speedy tailback Noel Devine also took off for 131 yards on the ground. On the season, West Virginia is putting up an average of 446 yards, which is good for 26th in the nation. The defense has been spectacular so far allowing 255.7 yards per game for 12th in the nation and has been particularly stingy against the run. This will easily be their toughest test yet though in LSU.

The Tigers have opened up 3-0 with an average winning margin of 17.3 points per game. LSU caught a break in their opener against North Carolina when the Heels had double digit suspensions on the team. They went on to beat UNC 30-24 and have since rolled over Vanderbilt and Mississippi State. LSU is is 2-1 ATS in their first 3 games, failing to cover in the opener but easily covering the last two contests. In the game last week against Mississippi State, LSU slowed it down and played tenacious defense, intercepting 5 passes. On the season, the Tigers have allowed 279.7 yards per game – good for 25th nationally. The key to their defense is in takeaways and limiting opponents’ points. LSU is allowing a measly 11.3 points per game, which is the 6th best total in all of college football.

West Virginia vs. LSU Prediction:

Spread Prediction (TOP PLAY) – This is a nice matchup of two top 25 teams who have different styles of play. LSU is a nasty team to play at home, winning 6 straight there. West Virginia runs into troubles when they go on the road and out of conference. They are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 outside of the conference. Top Play Prediction = LSU -9

Game Total Prediction – Both defenses have been stout so far this season. This is nothing new for LSU who annually has a ferocious defense as evidenced by 8 of their last 9 home games going under the posted total. West Virginia usually doesn’t have that strong of a defense but I expect it to continue on more week against a subpar Tigers’ offense. Prediction = Under 42
