The 23rd ranked West Virginia Mountaineers will travel to Huntington, West Virginia to take on the Marshall Thundering Herd Friday night in the second week of college football. Tonight’s game is being played at Marshall’s Edwards Stadium and kickoff is set for 7:00 PM EST. West Virginia, who was given a 23rd ranking, is 1-0 coming into tonight’s game, while Marshall is 0-1.
The Mountaineers are coming off a shutout (first since 2005) win as they beat up on Coastal Carolina 31-0 last Saturday. West Virginia failed to cover the 41.5 point spread in their home opener as they got off to a slow start, scoring only 10 points in the first half of the game. The locker room talk at half must have brought a spark to the Mountaineers as they touchdowns on three of their next four drives to open the half. Sophomore quarterback Geno Smith made his first college start for West Virginia and had a solid outing, finishing 20 for 27 for 216 yards and a touchdown. Noel Devine pitched in for 111 rushing yards of the total 400+ yards of offense for the Mountaineers.
Saying that the Marshall Thundering Herd had a tough game to start the season might be considered an understatement. Marshall went into Ohio State to face the number 2 ranked Buckeyes, and came out with an ugly 45-7 loss. No one had expected Marshall to beat the Buckeyes in the opener Thursday, but Marshall failed to cover the 28 point spread as they lost by 38 points. Marshall had turnover problems, which included fumbling the opening kickoff of the game – not something you want to do against Ohio State on the road. The Marshall defense allowed 529 yards against them, while the offense could only rack up 199 yards and no points.

West Virginia vs Marshall Prediction for Friday Night:
Spread Prediction (Top Play) – These two teams have played each other the past four years with West Virginia coming out on top in all four games. West Virginia failed to cover the 20 point spread in last years game, but won by 17 points in a 24-7 victory. In tonight’s game I don’t see Marshall doing much damage against the 3-3-5 defense of West Virginia, as they managed only 44 total yards of rushing against the Buckeyes. I like the QB/RB combination of Geno Smith and Noel Devine, and I think they will get off to a much faster start tonight. Marshall may keep it close, but I can’t see them sticking with the Mountaineers all night. TOP PLAY PREDICTION – MOUNTAINEERS -12.5
Game Total Prediction – The Mountaineers defense is coming off their first shutout since 2005 and will come into tonight’s game with a bit of a swagger. Marshall did nothing to impress me offensively against Ohio State last week and I don’t see them doing too much here tonight. Look for the total to creep close to the 46 tonight, but I can’t see it going over the number. Prediction – Under 46 points
