If there is one word to describe the week in college hoops, it is simply ‘offensive.’
Offensive in a bad way, not the ‘scoring a lot of points way.’ Already this week seven major conference teams have won games in which they scored less than 54 points. I’d like to give the nod to ‘great defense’ but let’s be honest; some of the play has just been really ugly lately.
Wisconsin was the latest in the distrubing trend, as they might have dealt the final blow to Michigan’s scant NCAA Tournament hopes with their 53-52 win. Keeping true to form, Wisconsin won an ugly game in about the ugliest way possible; banking in an awkward three from the top of the key as the buzzer sounded.
Everyone loves a buzzer beater, but I’m not sure if last night’s brickfest is exactly what college hoops fans are hoping for in three weeks come tourney time.

Today’s Free College Basketball Picks:
Arizona Wildcats -1.5 @ USC Trojans
No team in the country is hotter than the Arizona Wildcats. Sean Miller’s Cats are looking for their ninth consecutive victory tonight in Southern Cal. They have knocked off the Trojans in four of their last five contests, but the talent discrepency is as large this year as it has been since the Lute Olsen days of glory.
Arizona has a lot to play for. Not only can they all but cinch at least a share of the Pac-10 conference title with a win, but they are quietly positioning themselves for a #2 seed in the Big Dance. One of the main reasons why is All-American candidate Derrick Williams. Most of the country got their first introduction to him with his spectacular weak-side block of Washington’s game winning shot attempt last Saturday. However, at nearly 20 points and nine boards a night, Williams has been getting it done in a major way all season long.
USC on the other hand, has really been scuffling. They’ve won their last two games to edge comfortably over .500, but at 15-12 it has been a largely disappointing season.
They are, however, the stingiest defensive team in the Pac-10 at only 63 points allowed per game. What does that tell you when the best defensive team in the league is barely .500? Yep, we could be looking at another offensively challenged game.
Overall, I love the Wildcats in this one. They are significantly more talented and are playing great basketball. This feels more like a four or five point line game to me, lay the slim one and a half and be grateful.

Marquette Warriors @ UConn Huskies -5
Marquette is basically playing with their backs to the wall for the rest of the season. Another loss or two and it is likely the NIT for the Warriors.
Meanwhile, UConn has come back to Earth a little bit after their amazing start as teams are figuring out how to defend Kemba Walker a little more than he has figured out how to involve his teammates when he is doubled.
Marquette has a knack for playing teams tough, despite their eleven losses, seven of the have been by less than five points. I like UConn to win, but I feel pretty confident that Marquette will make it interesting.
