College Basketball Picks and Predictions for March 7th

This weekend was an uneasy one for the multitude of teams balancing delicately on the dreaded bubble. At least one spot might have vanished when George Mason got upset in the CAA semis by Virginia Commonwealth. The Rams will take on hated rival Old Dominion tomorrow for an automatic ticket to the Dance.

As for Mason, they are still IN barring an enormous Committee oversight. The result is one less spot for the big guys to fight over. A similar situation could happen in the Missouri Valley. The Indiana State Sycamores will be making their first appearance in the tourney in ten years after upsetting Missouri State (a day after upsetting Wichita State) in the Missouri Valley Championship.

The Bears will be sweating Selection Sunday to say the least, and may very likely find themselves on the outside looking in. However, their 26-6 record and Top 35 RPI at the very least merit some consideration.

Much of it will depend on if teams in similar spots to George Mason and Missouri State can handle their business with more aplomb the next few days. Every mid-major big boy that slips up, ironically, ends up taking a spot from another mid-major would-be tourney darling.

Today’s Free College Basketball Picks:

Virginia Commonwealth Rams @ Old Dominion Monarchs -4.5 (Colonial Final)

VCU pulled off a major upset yesterday, derailing the George Mason Patriots. Now, just one day later they have to gear back up for a second upset over Old Dominion. ODU has dominated VCU in earlier meetings, but as the saying goes, it is hard to beat a team three times in one season.

Of course, it gets a little easier if you are the vastly superior team. VCU has athleticism, but is much sloppier with the basketball and is more turnover prone than ODU.

Both teams should have their fans in the stands in fairly equal numbers, so the home court won’t be an issue, as it often is in smaller conference championship games. The biggest factor is the amount of energy; both emotional and physical, VCU expended ending the nation’s longest winning streak (16 games) with their upset of GMU.

ODU should have a bid sewn up regardless, but I like the Monarchs reeling one back in the pool for the conference big-boys by capturing the automatic bid today.

Wofford Terriers @ Charleston Cougars -1 (Southern Conference Final)

The Southern Conference has been one of the nation’s hidden gems over the past four or five years. Perhaps their most team, Davidson, who was literally one shot away from a Final Four three years ago, guided by the hot hand of Steph Curry has fallen back to the pack a bit. However, even with Steph Curry gone to the NBA, teams like Wofford and Charleston have given plenty of major conference teams fits plenty of times since.

Charleston is most known for their upset win over North Carolina last year, behind Andrew Goudelock’s enormous effort. Well, one year late, Goudelock, the SoCon’s player of the year is still there, and his 23.4 ppg average rates in the top ten in the nation. Charleston has had a good team the past three years, but Davidson, Winthrop and Wofford have always occupied the league’s automatic bid. Today, they get their chance to finally take that last step and get back to the Dance.

Wofford played one of the nation’s most brutal schedules pre-conference, facing an incredible nine ranked opponents. While they lost most of the games, they were usually competitive and obviously better for the experience. They pushed teams like Michigan State, Xavier and Tennessee to the edge over the past two seasons, and gave Wisconsin a decent test in the the First Round of last year’s NCAA Tourney.

The Terriers have a good team, and beat CofC head to head just three weeks ago. However today, I like Goudelock and the Cougars to grab the title, and immediately become that #14 seed that makes your stomach a little nervous if you are their #3 seeded dance partner.
