College Basketball Picks for February 28th – Villanova Notre Dame

Another potential #1 seed took a dive this weekend, the latest victim being the Pittsburgh Panthers. Rick Pitino donned the white suit and the YUM! Center bubbled a feverish pitch, spurring the Louisville Cardinals to a huge win launching them back into prime position to land a Top 4 seed in two weekends from tonight.

Pittsburgh still holds a one game lead over Notre Dame, with St. John’s and Louisville close in the rear view mirror, and still has a pretty reasonable shot at a #1 seed by winning the Big East Tournament (a place where they have excelled in recent years past). However, they did once again show flashes of the same thing that has ailed Pitt’s equally (if not more) talented teams in the NCAA Tournament; a terrible inability to score the basketball.

Defense wins championships. That’s the mantra, right? Well, name me the last National Champ that didn’t feature at least one premier scorer? I’m not sure you can. Should Pitt cut down the nets, then of course all that changes. But in the meantime, when you are filling out your NCAA brackets, look through the past 10-15 years, remember today’s Louisville loss and consider backing on of the Big Ten stalwarts, Ohio State or Purdue.

Today’s Free College Basketball Picks:

Villanova Wildcats @ Notre Dame Irish -4.5

Notre Dame has a shot to win the Big East regular season title after Louisville dusted off Pitt last night at the Yum! Center. Villanova on the other hand is still reeling from their blowout loss at home to St. John’s. These are two teams heading in clearly opposite directions.

This is a really favorable match-up for Notre Dame. Both teams have similar style games, only the Irish play it a little cleaner and more efficiently. Notre Dame has reeled off 9 of their last 10 and a win tonight would guarantee them a coveted double-bye in the Big East Tournament.

The Wildcats on the other hand have dropped 4 of 6, and even the return and solid play of Corey Stokes didn’t provide the lift they had hoped for. On the road at Notre Dame is a tough place to get right. The Irish are 16-0 at home and are looking to close out a perfect home season with a win tonight.

I think they’ll get it, and cover with as much ease as one can expect in a brutal Big East slug-fest.

Kansas State Wildcats +9.5 @ Texas Longhorns

The sentiment that the Longhorns had wrapped up their #1 seed in the Tourney was perhaps a little overstated. After their second straight road loss, this one to Colorado, the Longhorns are battling to stay on top of the Big Twelve, let alone the national polls.

It isn’t so much losing a road game in conference that’s troubling, it’s losing back-to-back’ers against Nebraska and Colorado that raise an eyebrow. For a team that prides itse;f on being the best defensive team in the country, giving up 91 points to Colorado is inexcusable.

Meanwhile, Jacob Pullen and Kansas State have roared back after a disastrous start of the season and are not only in the Tourney picture, they are edging off the bubble and into ‘safe’ status. The biggest reason has been their dominant inside defense, and of course the offensive explosion of Pullen.

Ever since his 37 point outburst in their win over then-#1 Kansas, Pullen has put the team on his back and made good on his promise to ‘not play’ in the NIT. Texas is tough at home, but K-State is starting to look like the team everyone thought they were preseason. Ironically, Texas has too the last two weeks.

I like K-State giving Texas one heckuva fight, if not pulling the upset outright.
