College Basketball Picks For March 2nd

Some teams just can’t win for losing. Such is life on the bubble eternal for Seth Greenberg and the Virginia Tech Hokies. Mere days after a “season defining” and “resurrecting” win over the #1 Duke Blue Devils, what does Virginia Tech do?? Opens up their doors for the Boston College Eagles and get their brains beat in on their home floor.

Suffice it to say no one will be storming the court tonight in Blacksburg. And perhaps no two-game swing in college basketball better analogizes the entire season better than these three days in the life of a Hokie. In a year in which seemingly no one wants to be the top-ranked team in the country, it also seems like no one wants to play their way out of harm’s way before Selection Sunday.

For every “crippling loss” there is an equal and opposite “season defining” win; and the roles are played intermittently by the same exact teams. Quick – off the top off you head, are any of these teams’ statuses any more clear than the ubiquitous and arbitrary “well, if they______ in their conference tournament then_____”?

Virginia Tech, Boston College, Richmond, Alabama, Tennessee, Baylor, Colorado, Nebraska, Marquette, Butler, Gonzaga, Michigan State, Illinois, Michigan, Southern Miss, UAB, Memphis, Wichita State, Missouri State, Colorado State, UNLV, Washington, Washington State, Georgia… seriously, is there really any difference?

While some might decry it, I’d contest that therein lies the true beauty of college basketball. For all the conjecture and debate, there will be only one champion on April 4th. To find out who that team is, all you have to do is look up at the scoreboard.

Today’s Free College Basketball Picks:

North Carolina Tar Heels -1.5 @ Florida State Seminoles

Carolina remains the hottest team in the country outside of BYU, yet for some reason Vegas seems a little slow to respond. Perhaps it is the lag effect from the brutal pounding Carolina took from media and pundits all November and December, because if you have watched this team play over the last six weeks you see a really intriguing darkhorse Final Four candidate, not a slim one point favorite over a mediocre Florida State squad.

Don’t forget, Florida State is playing without Chris Singleton, who lead the team in scoring, rebounds, assists and steals. He also filled the team water bottles and washed the jerseys. Ok, the last part isn’t true, but it IS true to say Chris Singleton WAS Florida State basketball this season.

To make matters even tougher, Caroilina has reeled off thirteen of fourteen, and freshman phenom, then flop, and now phenom again; Harrison Barnes has finally settled in and is playing like the All-American he was billed as. A guy like Chris Singleton might have been a great defensive answer for Barnes but… ok you get the point.

Even with Singleton, I would pick the Heels by four or five. Without him, this is a no-brainer. Take the Heels and lay the slim one and a half.

Clemson Tigers @ Duke Blue Devils -12.5

Ok, so three days ago Duke was upset by Virginia Tech and lost their #1 national ranking. The loss pulled them back into a tie with hated rival North Carolina atop the ACC and put their status as a #1 seed in severe jeopardy. Tonight, hosts a road-pitiful Clemson team traveling to Durham to face a Duke squad with fire in their, and Coach K’s, eyes.

If you think that sounds like a recipe for a disaster, we are in the same kitchen. Duke doesn’t lose often, but when they DO, the next opponent usually catches hell from the Devils. After the loss at Florida State, they turned around and handed Virginia a 16 point pasting. After the humiliation at St. John’s, the Dukies travelled to Maryland and unleashed some humiliation of their own, 80-62.

I can’t imagine Clemson will be treated any more favorably tonight in front of the frothing Cameron Crazies.

And for those of you who prefer numbers to logic, how about these: Duke has won 24 of the past 26 meetings versus Clemson. The last time the Clemson Tigers won AT Durham was 1995 (for the record, that was Coach K’s only losing season in the past 30 years). Clemson is 3-6 on the road, despite the ACC being very subpar this year, and finally, hasn’t beaten a ranked opponent on the road since March of 2007.

I like Duke, and I like ‘em big. Gimme the Dukies venting some frustration on the Clemson Tigers – laying the 12.5 gladly.
