College Basketball Picks Jan 29 – Pittsburgh vs Rutgers

Saturday delivers a huge slate of good games to choose from; the Big East, Big Twelve and SEC all have enormous marquee matchups taking center stage.

Louisville gets an attempt to validate their solid record with a quality win today at UConn, and Georgetown tries to claw their way back into the Big East race at Villanova today. If both road teams were able to win today, the Big East race, which looked like a three or four team battle will explode into a six or seven team free for all.

The Big Twelve takes center stage at 9pm tonight when Texas hosts Missouri. The Longhorns have been on fire, including snapping Kansas’s insane 68-game home winning streak last weekend. They’ll have to bring their A-gam again tonight if they want to hold of Missouri and their frantic full court run-and-gun style.

Even the A-10 is serving up a gem today when conference standard bearer (and 6-0) Xavier travels to Richmond. If the Spiders can defend their home court, the A-10 gets really interesting at the top – if X can steal the road win they and Duquesne get some breathing room at the top of the standings.

It’s going to be a great day in college hoops – enjoy!

UAB Blazers +2.5 @ UCF Knights

UCF was the early season media darling. They rode upset wins over Florida and Miami (FL) to a perfect 14-0 start and the first national ranking in school history. ESPN ate the story of young Marcus Jordan, the under recruited progeny of Michael leading the Knights to an unbeaten record.

Then, suddenly, the bottom fell out. The Knights are now 14-5, losers of five straight games in conference, and none of them have been close. Conference USA is better than advertised, but home losses to East Carolina and Rice are inexcusable.

UAB meanwhile is a solid bubble team, and no worse than NIT bound. They enter at 14-5 (4-2) with three of their losses: Arizona St, Georgia, Memphis, coming by three points or less or in OT. Another loss was at Duke (no shame there) and all of a sudden their 14-5 looks a whole heck of a lot better than UCF’s.

The Knights have shown no sign of stopping their free fall, and a good UAB team is a tough foes to figure it out against. I like the Blazers not just covering but getting the road win tonight in Orlando.

Pitt Panthers -8.5 @ Rutgers Scarlett Knights

Pitt lost a little of their air of invincibility last week when Notre Dame came into the Petersen Center and sent the Panthers to a rare defeat. You can bet the senior-laden Panthers will be hungry to restore order tonight when they visit conference cellar-dweller Rutgers.

Pitt is one of the best defensive teams in the country, expect them to put the clamps down on Rutgers tonight. Pitt has won the last five consecutive games in Rutgers gym, and will be seeking to continue that domination tonight.

Rutgers (12-8, 3-5) has shown some brief glimpses of competitiveness, primarily against other lower-tier teams, beating Providence, Seton Hall and South Florida. Granted Providence and Seton Hall have shown some real flashes lately in huge upset wins, but Rutgers has yet to bring that same competitiveness against the league’s elite.

Rutgers average margin of defeat in their five conference losses has been just under 13ppg, their home losses have been by 9ppg. In my opinion, Pitt is the best team in the Beast, far better than Louisville and Cincinnati who steamrolled the Scarlett Knights.

Look for a focused Pitt team to come out sharp and hungry and avoid the potential lull in focus that facing a lower tier team sometimes induces. I like Pitt by double-digits tonight in Jersey.
