David Reitspies vs. Antonin Gavlas Pick – Czech TT Star Series May 25, 2020

The Czech TT Star Series is back from the weekend break and ready for some more table tennis action on Monday in Prague. Weekends and Wednesday are off days for players in the tournament, which is one of the best going at the moment. Best in the sense that the players are the best players. The majority of the players in the TT Star Series in Czechia would wipe the floor with a lot of the Russian and Ukranian players in the Liga Pro and Setka Cup.

There are a couple of players, like Jakub Nemecek and Jakub Seibert, who are finding it really tough to compete in this tournament. However, if they went to the Setka Cup, they’d probably find it a lot easier. Guys like Tomas Tregler and David Reitspies are way too good for them at this point in their careers. Reitspies won the most recent stage of the TT Star Series tournament.

Tregler lost his semifinal match, but has come back with a vengeance. He’s on an eight-match winning streak going into Monday and playing confidently. Tregler is also 9-1 in his previous ten matches. Table tennis is as much mental as it is skill. When you’re feeling locked in, then it’s difficult to get off that mountain top. Tregler has to get hot at the right moment when it matters during the semis and final, though.

Reitspies is coming off a finals win two weeks ago. A win in the grand finals is what he is looking at accomplishing, though. Tomas Konecny is the most recent winner in December. Reitspies will take on Antonin Gavlas who is another worthy competitor in the Czech TT Star Series. Gavlas is mid-tier to upper-tier in this tournament.

He can beat the best players, but probably isn’t consistent enough against them to win the grand final. Capable, yes, though it’s going to be difficult. Most of his matches against talented players tend to be pretty entertaining. They’re usually not over quickly. This match is scheduled for 2:00 a.m. EST, 11:00 a.m. PST. David Reitspies vs. Antonin Gavlas Prediction:

David Reitspies was on a cold run earlier in May around the 5th to 7th, where Reitspies went 1-6 in seven matches. He was quickly able to stabilize, though, and Reitpies has gone 15-7 since then. It could be better for Reitspies, but it was important not to allow a cold streak snowball into something much worse. Overall since April 20, Reitspies owns a record of 38-22 which is pretty productive, especially considering he’s in a tournament against some solid opponents. His matches against Antonin Gavlas have been highly entertaining which often comes down to the final set.

Antonin Gavlas heads into Monday with a record of 15-5 in his previous 50 matches. Dating back to April 20, Gavlas has gone 46-17 which is a tremendous result for Gavlas who has generally played second-fiddle to the likes of Konecny, Tregler, and Reitspies in the Czech TT Star Series. Reitspies and Gavlas are likely in for a competitive match in this contest.

Out of their 14 meetings against each other in past matches, 10 of them have gone to a fourth set for 71% of the time. In four of their previous five matches, they needed a fifth and final set to decide a winning player. There has been an average of 92.8 points scored in their last five meetings. All we need is four competitive sets to get this OVER the total. Reitspies and Gavlas likely score more than 75 points in this one on Monday morning in Prague.
