With the Michael Crabtree contract issue a thing of the past, the 49ers look to keep their impressive season going with a win over Atlanta. San Francisco (3-1) has had a strong first month and has done so without Crabtree, the 10th overall pick in April’s draft, who will not be in the line up for today’s game. Crabtree is the big-play threat San Francisco has been lacking, but has little knowledge of the offense due to his long holdout, and the problems compounded by his sitting out mini camps while recovering from a foot injury. The 49ers defense will have their hands full with Matt Ryan and his new favorite target in Tony Gonzalez. A struggling 49ers running game will try to take advantage of a Falcons defense that has allowed a total of 312 yards rushing in its last two games. The same can be said for Atlanta’s running game that has been struggling as of late as opponents have success in limiting their ground game. The Falcons won the last meeting 20-16 at home Nov. 4, 2007, a sloppy game that consisted of four interceptions and no TD passes. Falcons vs. 49ers Betting Predictions:
Final Score Prediction – Falcons 21 49ers 14
Spread- I like Atlanta in this one. The 49ers will have some matchup issues with Tony Gonzalez as he can play tight end and also split out as a wide receiver. The Falcons will be well rested coming off their bye week and should be firing on all cylinders. To make things worse for the 49ers, starting running back Frank Gore suffered an ankle injury in the loss to Minnesota on Sept. 27 and won’t be back until after next week’s bye at the earliest. The 49ers averaged 77.0 yards rushing in two games after Gore was hurt. Bet on the Falcons to beat this 2.5 point spread.
Over/Under – Take the UNDER 40.5 total points in this week 5 Falcons vs 49ers game, it will be a one sided offensive game. I expect Atlanta’s offense to take off especially with Jerious Norwood back in the line up to help Michael Turner in the backfield. The 49ers offense ranks 28th with 264.0 yards per game and don’t expect them to put up much more yards than that. Although middle linebacker Patrick Willis may be the best linebacker in the game, the Falcons offense is too diverse and too dangerous.
