Two more winning picks ATS last night, and the current college basketball win streak at thesportsgeek.com is now up to ten games in a row. It was a close call with Missouri last night, as the UCLA Bruins made a clutch late bucket to force overtime and then won 97-94 on the strength a back-to-back Shabazz Muhammad three pointers in the final minute of overtime. The freshman netted 27 points and led the Bruins to an enormous win that could potentially resurrect their season.
Lost in the loss was the best point guard performance I’ve seen this season. Missouri’s Phil Pressey had 19 points and 19 assists, but it was assist number 20, the easy backdoor layup missed by Bowers, that may have been their eventual undoing…
Today promises to be another intense day of college basketball action, so let’s dig right in with some more winning picks.
Kentucky Wildcats at Louisville Cardinals -8 (Total: 134)
Rivalries don’t get much nastier and much more intense than the battle in for Bluegrass supremacy between Kentucky and Louisville. Kentucky has won four straight in the rivalry, including last year’s near-apocalyptic Final Four matchup that had fans offering tens of thousands of dollars for tickets and fist-fighting each other in cancer wards (true story. Google it).
Today is Louisville’s best chance to knock off the Cats since Calipari arrived in Lexington. They have the better and deeper team, they are far more experienced and are playing in their home gym. Today should be their day.
However, eight points is a bunch to lay when hosting a team with a trio of future NBA Lottery picks. Granted, the competition has been weaker, but since the Baylor loss Kentucky has beaten each of their four opponents by at least 28 points. Their young nucleus has had some more time to play together and Ryan Harrow has gotten ingratiated into the offense. I expect them to play well today. I am not sure they win at the YUM! Center, but I do like them getting a giant fistful of points.
Free Pick: Kentucky Wildcats +8
UNLV is an underrated Final Four contending team. They are only ranked #20 in the nation, but they have one of the most dominant players in the nation in freshman Anthony Bennett. He wasn’t even around last year when the Runnin’ Rebs upset the #1 ranked Tarheels, but Mike Moser was (and still is). I am surprised the Tarheels are favored by three and a half, considering how abysmal they have been against top-rated foes. They have already lost by double digits to Butler, Indiana and Texas. Other than Indiana, I’d take UNLV over any of those teams.
Free Pick: UNLV +3.5
Speaking of Butler, the Bulldogs head to Vandy tonight for a game that sounds more competitive than it will be. If you play the “who beat who” game, you can leap that Vandy beat Xavier and Xavier beat Butler, so Bulldogs beware…. But it isn’t happening. Vandy is terrible. Butler is very good. Look for them to clearly out-execute the ‘Dores and get the comfortable road win tonight.
Free Pick: Butler Bulldogs -5.5
