Minnesota Timberwolves @ Phoenix Suns -3.5
Minnesota suffered an absolutely devastating loss this week losing rookie point guard sensation Ricky Rubio for the entire season with a torn ACL. It is a shame too, as this team was playing some excellent basketball and looking like a legitimate contender for a playoff berth in the Western Conference. They are fortunate in that their “other” point guard, Luke Ridnour, is a more than capable starter in the NBA, but they lose a ton of depth and frankly a whole lot of excitement, by losing Rubio for the season. Let’s hope he rehabs and is back on the court good as new next Fall.
In the meantime, the T’Wolves need to find a way to cope with the loss. They’ve lost two straight since losing Rubio after piling up three straight impressive wins; winning home and homes with Portland and beating the Clippers. Those wins were before Rubio got hurt. Two nights ago, without Rubio, they lost to the New Orleans Hornets by double-digits. Not good.
Phoenix and the ageless Steve Nash have been quietly hanging around and playing some pretty excellent basketball of late. Nash had a staggering 16 assists with NO turnovers a few nights ago. At 37 years of age. Incredible. Grant Hill is doing the same thing; despite being in his 47th NBA season (exaggerating. Relax.) he has become an absolute defensive stopper. Whoever Alvin Gentry puts him on tonight, be it Beasley, Derrick Williams, or whomever, you can take it to the bank they will be held below their season average.
Phoenix has won five of their last six and seven of nine overall. It is still unlikely they make the playoffs, but they are at least a testament to the incredible depth of the Western Conference. They have recently beaten Dallas, Memphis, Both Los Angeles teams and Minnesota over the last three weeks. Don’t let the record fool you, this team can play and is likely laying about two or three less points than they should be against a team in Minnesota that is going on the road in addition to dealing with the crisis of losing their point guard for the season.
I like love Kevin Love and the T’Wolves and have done mighty well picking them often this season. However, I don’t see this matchup as a favorable one for them tonight. Phoenix has beaten them nine straight times, including a nine-point win on the road earlier this season. I think the Suns make it an even ten tonight, and cover the three and a half point margin.
