The Rangers will hope to avoid the sweep and their seventh straight loss as they face off against the Boston Red Sox in the final game of a three-game series at Fenway on Thursday night.
The Red Sox opened the series on Tuesday snapping a six-game home losing streak with a narrow 7-6 victory on rookie Darnell McDonald’s game-winning RBI, bases-loaded, two-out single off the Green Monster in the bottom of the ninth. Boston extended their win streak to a pair winning game two, but it would again take extra baseball and a second straight last at-bat effort as Kevin Youkilis drilled an RBI double off the left-center field wall with two outs in the 12th inning, lifting the Red Sox to an 8-7 win. Boston’s offense continued to produce, as J.D. Drew hit a grand slam and McDonald homered in his second straight game for Boston after being called up from Triple-A Pawtucket. Texas’ Nelson Cruz, who leads the team with seven home runs, left the game with fatigue in his right hamstring after leaving Tuesday’s with a cramp in the same area. Rangers’ outfielder Josh Hamilton hit a three-run homer in the seventh that made it 7-all.
Starting for the Rangers will be southpaw C.J. Wilson. The 29-year old veteran returned to the Texas rotation with a 3-1 defeat at Toronto where he struck out nine and allowed five hits over seven innings, but was tagged with the loss when closer Kevin Rodriguez failed in his first save opportunity of the season. Wilson followed up losing his second straight in a 5-1 loss at the New York Yankees. He is 0-1 with 3 saves and one blown save in 12 games against Boston, but will make his first career start in Thursday’s contest.
For the Red Sox, they will go with righty, Texas born Clay Buchholz. After wining in his season debut against the Kansas City Royals, the 25-year old worked five innings and gave up four unearned runs—all in the first inning after center fielder Mike Cameron dropped a line drive for an error, in a 6-5 loss to the Tamp Bay Devil Rays. Buchholz has started against the Indians two times with a lifetime record of 1-1 and a 2.70 ERA.
The odds makers have the Red Sox as –1 ½ -point favorites with a game total of 9 runs.
Fenway is a tough place to play, and the crowds can at times resemble a tank of frenzied sharks, especially when the bats are as hot as they are. I just can’t see the Rangers beating them in this one. Boston wins and the OVER.
