NHL Picks and Predictions for March 17th

We used a late empty net goal to our advantage and finished the night 1-1. The NHL has 22 teams in action on this St. Patrick’s Day. Every game tonight (except BOS/NSH) involves a conference matchup, so we are sure to see some intense hockey. Look for the standings to be just as logged jammed tomorrow as they are today. This has been one of the best playoff races in recent history and has made for excellent viewing. Since it’s the day of GREEN today, let’s go make some green with these winning picks.

Tonight’s NHL Picks:

Chicago Blackhawks vs. Dallas Stars

Chicago has been showing the league as of late why they won the Stanley Cup last year. Toews, Kane Sharp and Hossa have all been on fire, exactly what the Hawks need. The Hawks have won 9 of 12, and own a very respectable 16-10-8 away record. Tonight they will be pitted against a hungry Stars team. Dallas sits in 7th with a 1 point cushion on the 9th place team. A win tonight by the Stars would vault them into a tie for 6th with the Blackhawks. The stars have taken 2 out of 3 this season with every game going over the total. The confirmed starters for tonight are Corey Crawford and Kari Lehtonen. I expect a highly paced game with plenty of power plays resulting from the intensity. Also I can’t overlook the high end talent playing at the top of their game in Chicago. We are going with the Hawks and plenty of goals.

Detroit Red Wings vs. Columbus Blue Jackets

The Wings enter tonight winners of 3 straight and look to pretty much end Columbus’ playoff hopes. The Blue Jackets currently sit in 12th place in the Western Conference and with a loss tonight their hopes of a playoff spot would be all but gone. The problem for the Blue Jackets is not the 7 points, but the teams in front of them that they will have to jump. With so many conference games left on everyone’s schedule there are always teams picking up points ahead of you, not to mention the dreaded 3 point game. For the Red Wings, the playoffs look to be just around the corner (again), and the Octopi are ready. I figure to see recently recalled Joey MacDonald in net tonight for the Red Wings. Jimmy Howard got the win last night over Washington in a hard fought game and will most likely get the night off. Though Columbus has struggled as of late, they have taken 2 out of 5 from the Wings. Tonight we are going to go with a desperate Blue Jackets team as home underdogs.

Good luck to the Hawks, the over and the Blue Jackets. And Happy St Patrick’s Day to everyone!
