NHL Predictions and Free Picks January 6th:

Toronto Maple Leafs @ Philadelphia Flyers – The Flyers enter this contest as one of the more disappointing teams thus far in the NHL season, currently sitting in 12th place in the Eastern Conference Standings. Toronto snuck by the Florida Panthers last night by a score of 3-2, winning just their 3rd game in their last 10 overall. While both the home team and the favourite dominate the series between these two, under is 6-2-1 in the last 9 meetings and is also 4-0 in the Flyers’ last 4 home games. Both teams average just over 2.5 goals per game, and the Flyers will be playing much tighter defense after a 7-4 loss to Ottawa on Sunday. I am leaning towards under a high total tonight in Philadelphia.

Free Pick – UNDER 6 at +100

Calgary Flames @ Minnesota Wild – Calgary comes into this one on a 5 game winning streak, thanks to a 3-1 win over the Nashville Predators last night in Music City. Meanwhile, the Wild dropped a 4-1 decision in Chicago last night to extend their losing skid to 4 games. Minnesota has only managed to tally 8 times in those 4 games. Calgary goaltender Miika Kiprusoff has allowed 1 goals or fewer in 11 of his last 17 starts, and Minnesota netminder Niklas Backstrom has a home Goals Against Average of 1.60 in 10 career starts against the Flames. Both teams do not come near the 3 goal per game average, and under is 13-5-8 in the last 26 meetings between these two in Minnesota. I am leaning towards good value in the under tonight in Minnesota.

Free Pick – UNDER 5 at +110

New York Islanders @ Colorado Avalanche – The Islanders start a 3 game road swing tonight in Colorado, a swing that could give G Rick DiPietro his first start in one of these games, but not likely tonight. Colorado comes into this one with an 8-2-1 record against the Eastern Conference, while the Islanders sit at 2-4-0 against the West. The Islanders have gone past regulation 16 times this year, with a record of 8-8. The Islanders play well against the Avalanche, going 4-1-1 on their last 6 overall, but these two teams only meet once annually. Both of these teams have made a huge turnaround over last season and anything can happen tonight in Denver, which is why I am leaning towards to big road underdog tonight for value.

Free Pick – ISLANDERS to win at +140
