NHL Predictions and Free Picks February 3rd:
Ottawa Senators @ Buffalo Sabres – The Red hot Sens take their 5-game road winning streak into Buffalo tonight, a team who is 6-1 in their last 7 home games. This is the 4th meeting of the season between these two divisional-rivals, and the Senators have taken all 3 of the previous meetings this season, twice on home ice and once in Buffalo. Buffalo fell one goal shy to the Penguins on Monday night, losing 5-4 to the defending champion in a game where offense took center stage. The OVER is 6-1-1 in the last 8 meetings between the Sens and Sabres at HSBC Arena in Buffalo, and 3-1-1 in the last 5 meetings overall. I am leaning towards OVER a small total tonight in Buffalo.
Free Pick – OVER 5 (-140)
Carolina Hurricanes @ Calgary Flames – The streaking Carolina Hurricanes visit the slumping Flames tonight in a game that would have been much easier to predict in 2009. The Flames won just once in 2010, beating the lowly Edmonton Oilers on home ice. Plenty of new faces on a Flames roster that are looking to make a new for themselves in Calgary. The Hurricanes are 5-21 (with 2 ties as the Hartford Whalers) all-time in Calgary, and the home team is 6-2-2 in the last 10 meetings between the Flames and Canes. I am leaning towards Calgary to crank up the heat in an effort to get back into the middle of the playoff picture in the West.
Free Pick – FLAMES to win (-170)
Philadelphia Flyers @ Edmonton Oilers – The Oilers snapped a horrid losing skid on Monday as they beat Carolina 4-2, a skid that saw them go 0-11-2 during a 13-game stretch. The win was the Oilers first of 2010, as they look to make it two in a row against a Flyers team who is trying to improve on a current 2-game win streak themselves. The Flyers shutout Calgary 3-0 on Monday night, which was the start of a 3-game road trip. The Oilers play well against Philadelphia, as the Flyers are 0-5-1 in the last 6 meetings overall. The Oilers are a massive home underdog tonight, and I like the value we are getting for a team fresh off a big moral victory.
Free Pick – OILERS to win (+170)
