We had to sweat it out a little bit last night as Pitt did their best to give away the cover late by simply refusing to put the ball in the basket any longer, but alas they skidded JUST inside the number. A lot of teams seem to have similar troubles against UVA, so perhaps I am being a little hard on the Pathers, but for anyone who watched last night’s game, suffice it to say it wasn’t the most aesthetically pleasing display of the season.
There was also noth pleasant about Seton Hall’s continued implosion as the drop from quality seed to NIT’d – and it got particularly ugly when Ryan Gibbs forearmed Ryan Arcidiaccano in the face (and was properly ejected). The kid immediately tweeted some genuine remorse after the game, and reached out to Ryan directly as well, so I’m willing to give him a pass and hope the media does as well. But it was a clear indication that the frustration level has boiled past the point of no return and the Pirates tourney dreams have likely expired.
Tonight is a great night for intense rivalry games – they may not be between the best basketball squads, but Auburn v. Alabama, Michigan v. Michigan State and Kentucky v. Tennessee are always entertaining rivalries. Let’s dig in and see if we can start a little winning run…

Today’s Free Pick:
San Diego State Aztecs -3.5 at New Mexico Lobos
Don’t look now, but Steve Fischer and company are at it again in beautiful San Diego. The Aztecs fell off the national radar a bit after a tough December where they lost to Arizona, Cincinnati and scored just 36 points in a loss to Washington. However, they have now reeled off 11 of their last 13 games, and look like a sure-fire NCAA Tournament team as is becoming customary. Their losses; road games at Colorado State and Boise State both have tourney hopes and their wins, with the exception of a squeaker at Nevada (poor game for sure) have been fairly comfortable.
New Mexico, long a MWC power, is in the midst of an unusually bad season. They enter tonight 14-11 and just 6-7 in MWC play. They have dropped four in a row and six of their last eight games and things do not get an easier tonight as they host the best team in the league. New Mexico looked like they could wipe away the embarrassing Grand Canyon loss right before conference play when they started 3-1 with wins over Colorado State at home and Utah State on the road. Since then, they’ve gone just 3-6 in conference play and even the NIT is looking a little distant.
Tonight presents a huge opportunity to salvage the season with a big win, but I don’t think they can get it done. The favorite is 7-2 ATS in their last nine meetings. The UNDER is an impressive 8-0 ATS, however, with tonight’s total dropping all the way to 110, I’m staying away. SDSU is averaging over 63 pgg in their last ten games, and that includes the clunker (41) against Boise State.
I like SDSU to show well tonight and get the quality road win and cover.
