Sevilla vs. Barcelona Pick – La Liga June 19, 2020

Real Madrid put Barcelona on notice again Thursday, as they were in terrific form to trounce on Valencia for a 3-0 win. The lack of defensive depth for Valencia really came through in the second-half. Real Madrid have too many weapons for a battered defence to stop. Karim Benzema had a field day on their defence, as he netted 2 goals to lead Real Madrid. Benzema was a magician with the third goal.

The entire sequence was beautiful leading up to the goal by Benzema. It was a possible goal-of-the-season that you will have to look up if you missed the match. Largely underappreciated, Benzema might be the one to spearhead a win over Barcelona. In any event, the race to the end is getting exciting in the La Liga. I’m not hating this new format with more games during the week.

Barcelona are on the pitch after defeating Leganes by a score of 2-0 on Tuesday. It’s the second straight win for Barca since the La Liga shutdown. They opened with a 4-0 win over Mallorca, and then made it a 2-0 win most recently. That’s a 6-0 start, as it doesn’t seem like either Barca or Real have missed a beat after sitting on the shelf for a few months waiting for the call to resume play.

Since losing against Real in March, 2-0, Barca has won 1-0, 4-0, and 2-0 for a combined score of 7-0. That is what they tend to do against weaker opponents, but I think the poor showing against their rivals helped in a way. Some clubs need a wake up call at points throughout the season, and that might have been theirs in March. Barca head into Friday with a record of 20-4-5 and 64 points, with just a 2-point advantage on Real now.

The La Liga is Real Madrid, Barcelona, and then everyone else. The best team in the next tier has to be Sevilla or Atletico Madrid. Sevilla are holding strong for third, with Atletico Madrid 2 points behind. Sevilla welcome Barcelona to Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan with a record of 14-9-6 and 51 points. To bump Barca out of their current form, they must get an A+ performance from their playmakers. Head below for our free Sevilla vs. Barcelona pick for June 19, 2020 in the La Liga.

Sevilla vs. Bercelona Prediction:

Sevilla have been good, just not good enough to compete with Barcelona and Real Madrid. They are certainly capable of pulling off an upset, and could do it today, but not consistent enough to hang with them. Sevilla is coming off a 1-1 draw against Levante, which was a missed opportunity.

Levante are an average team and great for finding ties, but Sevilla let a winnable game get away. Levante scored with 87 minutes on the clock. Getting lazy like that late isn’t going to work against Barca. The last time Sevilla played Real Madrid or Barca, they lost 2-1 on January 18 versus Real.

Sevilla’s most recent match against Barcelona wasn’t a competitive affair. Barca torched Sevilla for a 4-0 win in October. In their previous three meetings, Barca have been winners by scores of 6-1, 4-2, and 4-0 for a combined score of 14-3 since January 30, 2019. Barca are winners in six of their previous seven matches against Sevilla.

Jordi Alba will return to the lineup after missing the Leganes match due to a one-game suspension. Alba scored against Mallorca then had to sit out the next match. He should help in this one, but look for star Lionel Messi to have another big match. Messi has scored against Legandes and Mallorca, and is eyeing another big performance Friday. Messi has come out and said that he’s not happy with their effort against Legendes and Mallorca. These were 4-0 and 2-0 wins.

He thought they could have been much better. What Messi is doing is looking at Real Madrid and knows how his team has to play to beat them. I think this Barca club looked at what Real did yesterday against Valencia, and they’re going to try to grab back some of the attention from their rival. Sevila aren’t going to be a pushover at home. They are going to give Barca a solid match here, but a focused Messi should be too much to handle. I like a 2-1 win in favour of Barcelona.
