The PGA Tour’s 2020 West Coast Swing comes to a close this week with a final stop in the City of Angels for the Genesis Invitational.
The field is thicker than a snicker with Rory McIlroy atop the betting board and Brooks Koepka 7 places behind him! Justin Thomas, Jon Rahm, Tiger Woods, and Dustin Johnson are just a few names at the top.
The suddenly surging Jason Day is all the way back at 33 to 1 with Justin Rose at 40 to 1 and youngster Sungjae Im at (+5000). The field is really loaded this week!
Riviera Country Club, the golf course that will play host to this week’s Genesis Invitational, is one of the crown jewels of the PGA Tour.
Never short on difficulty, Riviera is a classical style golf course with tight treelines, uneven fairways, deep bunkers, and speedy Bentgrass/POA greens.
Even with the intricacies around every turn, Riviera remains a long baller’s paradise.
Just one look at the betting odds and we can learn that much, take Chez Reavie and Francisco Molinari for example. Those two are the 43rd and 24th ranked golfers in the world today yet their odds to win are as long as Lurch lying down.
Both men sit at 150 to 1 to win this thing. What do they have in common? They lack power off the tee.
BetOnline.AG has the odds for us this week.
Let’s dive into our betting odds and picks for the PGA Tour’s Genesis Invitational.
My best good fr… okay, I’ve done that joke enough but the movie sure doesn’t get old. Apparently, neither does Bubba Watson. He may get bored for 80% of the year but when he comes alive, we bear witness to greatness.
Course familiarity will be paramount this weekend at Riviera and not only is Bubba aware of his surroundings on the golf course, but the man has also won this tournament 3 times.
In fact, his victories have come in 2014, 2016, 2018, and… It’s simple math, guys.
Torrey Pines is one of the only courses on the PGA Tour that is fairly similar to Riviera and we, of course, played there a few weeks ago.
Watson finished 6th behind McIlroy, Rahm, and Leishman. He followed that up with a 3rd place finish in Phoenix.
I expect that we are going low with this bet as a wager on Bubba Watson this week is all systems go but we have to remember how talented this field is and take the even money.
I think we’re getting a great number here. Marc’s game seems to be coming around as well.
I just mentioned that Torrey Pines was very similar to Riviera. Well, several weeks ago, Marc Leishman took home the first place prize money down the coast in San Diego.
He excels in harsh conditions while others struggle. This is one advantage, though, that will likely be a moot point as we are expecting sunny skies and virtually perfect playing weather.
The Aussie superstar was 4th here last year and 5th in 2016. The only problem with that time period is he missed the cut in ’17 and ’18.
He won his previous outing. That course was very similar to this one. 4th here in his latest appearance. (+150) for just a top twenty? I think this is a must take.
I love the plus money, again! Tony is simply tailor-made for a golf course like this.
He isn’t the most accurate guy off the tee but with particularly low roughs, I think he should be just fine if his balls stray a little wide. He can miss a little bit but just miss in the right direction.
Lately, Tony Finau has been playing some of the best golf of his career. He lost out in a playoff less than two weeks ago to Webb Simpson in Phoenix.
A week prior, he finished 6th at Torrey Pines with finishes of 14th and 10th preceding the Farmers. He was 2nd here in 2018 and 15th last year. I love the plus money on a victory for Tony here.
I see all three of our picks as potential winners but let’s take the even or better money with each wager.
The Genesis Invitational has always been a hotly contested/star-studded affair and 2020 isn’t looking any different.
Rory McIlroy will be in the house as well as European stalemate Jon Rahm.
McIlroy is the new world #1 player and Rahm has simply been better than everyone else so far this year.
Their odds are a bit pricey even for a top 10 bet so I moved us down the betting board ever so slightly.
Tony Finau, Marc Leishman, and Bubba Watson are all high performers at Riviera and each has top 4 or better finishes in their previous outings.
There were lots of golfers I wanted to pick this week but, in my opinion, these three carry the most value.
