My friend Steve has written an article for the upcoming PGA Farmers Insurance Open tournament with his personal picks and predictions. Steve is one of the best golf handicappers I have seen, and as a good buddy of mine he has helped win lots of money the past few summers betting on golf. I recently taught Steve the basics to running a website and he put up his Golf Picks blog where you will find all of his picks for upcoming tournaments. I definitely recommend bookmarking the site. Here is his guest post on the Farmers Insurance Open, enjoy…
The men are ready to tee it up in sunny La Jolla, California for the Farmers Insurance Open. They will have to manage around The North and South courses at historic Torrey Pines. Torrey Pines demands the players hit the ball long and accurately. The South Course will be played for three rounds of the tournament and is a 7600 yard Par 72 beast.
Interestingly enough I think a few of you might recognize the player who holds the course record on the South Course, Tiger Woods. Woods will be making his first appearance in 2011 and will be hoping to start this year off well. If history repeats itself he will. Woods has won his last five starts at Torrey Pines including claiming this championship from 2005-2008 and the US Open in 2008.
Another player making his first start on the PGA Tour this year will be Phil Mickelson. Mickelson will be coming home to a course he played all the time while going up. Phil has also won this tournament multiple times, capturing the title here in (1993, 2000, 2001). He will have the support of the crowd as he always does and should feel very comfortable.
Other players who will have plenty of eyes on them this week include Rickie Fowler, Dustin Johnson, last week’s winner Jhonattan Vegas, and of course John Daly (how can you miss him in those pants.)
This week we get absolutely no value with Tiger Woods so we will have to cheers against him. He was listed as low as 2/1 on some sites to win outright. I have broken down the field and utilized previous stats, personal knowledge and recent play to come up with 3 selections for this week.

Farmers Insurance Open Betting Picks
1. Dustin Johnson 20/1 @ 5Dimes.com
This will be a common pick this as I feel he has the all-around game to rival anyone on tour. He hits the ball a mile yet has a very nice short game for such a long hitter. Without a great History here at Torrey Pines I look for him to make a statement this week and put himself in plenty of birdie opportunities. (Do it for yourself, Natalie and us this week DJ!)
2. Nick Watney 25/1 @ BetED.com
Watney is a player who is going to win a major soon. He has all the tools to play well on difficult courses. Here are some quick facts from last year that I like heading into Torrey Pines. He was tied for 10th on tour in Par 5 scoring average, 20th in driving distance and 4th in top 10 finishes. All those stats are nice but the fact of the matter is, he loves Torrey Pines. Three top 10`s in his last 4 starts here including the title in 2009. (Start 2011 off with a win Nick!)
3. Charles Howell III 27/1 @ 5Dimes.com
Charles Howell III had a T9 last year at the Farmers insurance Open. The fact that he took advantage of the par 5s (-12) while playing the Par 4s and Par3s at a combined (+2) is why he has had good success on these two courses. He has two runner-up finishes at this event and you will see his name there on Sunday once again this year. (Hoping this year it’s your turn Charles!)
Toss these three picks in and let’s cheer for a big payday coming on Sunday!
