Parx Racing Selections for July 13, 2020 – Horse Racing Picks

We’re in Philadelphia at Parx looking for winning horses on Monday. The countdown to the TVG Haskell Stakes (Gr. 1) is on. That $1,000,000 event will take place at Monmouth on Saturday, with some big players set to participate in the much anticipated race. Bob Baffert’s Authentic might be the most notable entry in the Haskell Stakes. Authentic is probable to run on Saturday as is Dr. Post.

Authentic is currently +1000 to win the Kentucky Derby at BetOnline. He didn’t have the run he wanted in the Santa Anita Derby (Gr. 1) on June 6, but Authentic is still 3 for 4 in his career. Since losing the Santa Anita Derby, a lot of attention has been taken off him. Honor A. P. won that race by 2 ¾ lengths over Authentic. I wouldn’t be so quick to discount Authentic, though. I’m excited to see how he runs next weekend.

Before we get to Monmouth on Saturday, there are a slew of tracks with racing throughout the week. Parx in Philadelphia is one of those tracks operational this week. They are putting on 11 races today, with a combined amount of $250,000 on the table at Parx on Monday. Head below for our free Parx Racing picks for July 13, 2020.

Let’s go to the backend of the racecard at Parx set for later in the afternoon. We are handicapping Race 8, 9, 10, so if you want to multi-bet the three races, that’s certainly possible. Race 8 is the co-feature event of the day at Parx, with a purse of $40,000 up for grabs. A $40,000 purse will attract some quality runners from the stable.

Race 8 covers 6 furlongs on the dirt. This looks like an event between Noble Endeavor, Brilliant Chase, and Jerusalem Gates. Brilliant Chase is running out of the No. 7 post position and in search of the first win in his career. He has shown some solid consistency throughout his career and might be ready to pop, though.

Brilliant Chase has finished in the top-3 in 7 of 11 races his young career. He’s finished 2nd, 2nd, 2nd, 3rd, 5th in his previous five races. There has to be some frustration for his connections to come so close in four straight races. Brilliant Chase took a bit of a layoff after finishing 3rd on March 10. Upon his return, Brilliant Chase finished 5th on June 24 in a similar event. Brilliant Chase was regarded as being tired in that race which covered 6 furlongs.

Noble Endeavor is back on the track after a layoff. He’s made two races in his career with finishes of 5th and 4th on November 11, 2019 and December 9, 2019. His most recent race was for $45,000 and he underperformed for 4th. His workouts in the morning have been fairly impressive. I believe we’re going to see a much better horse on Monday. Noble Endeavor completed 4 furlongs with times of 47.26 and 47.86 seconds, and 5 furlongs at 1:01.16. My only concern for Noble Endeavor is that 6 furlongs might be a bit too long for his legs.

Jerusalem Gates made his debut on June 24 and was awfully impressive. The $210,000 Jerusalem Gates came 3 ½ lengths away from winning as a first-time runner. He finished ahead of Brilliant Chase by around 5 lengths, who finished 5th in that event. Jerusalem Gates was able to earn $11,200 out of the $40,000 purse for a nice debut on the track. I think he can do one better today to edge out Noble Endeavor.

Distance:5 ½ Furlongs
Purse:$22,000

Race 9 is sandwiched between the two feature races at Parx Racing on Monday. This event has 5 ½ furlongs of racing on the dirt for a $22,000 purse. Corn Off the Cob and Mess’n Around might get into a tight duel in the stretch here. Corn Off the Cob is the betting favorite from the No. 8 post position. She is 8 for 21 in her career and has finished in the top-3 in four straight races. In 10 of his previous 12 races, Corn Off the Cob has been in the top-3, so she has been a consistent performer. In her most recent win, she won by 3 ¼ lengths over Tapete Claire in a $22,000 event on June 22.

Corn Off the Cob finished 3rd in a $40,000 event on July 1. That was just a bit too much for Corn Off the Cob, so she’s back down in class for Monday. It’s been a heck of a nice investment for her stable. Purchased for $4,500 back in 2017, Corn Off the Cob has accumulated $169,260 in earnings. You can’t expect much from a $4,500 purse, but she has proven the doubters wrong that passed on her. Mess’n Around should prove to be her most difficult opponent in Race 9.

Mess’n Around gets the inside rail from the No. 1 post position. She isn’t getting much respect as a +250 horse on the morning-line. I’d have her in the +200 range instead of +250. Mess’n Around has stake experience, unlike Corn Off the Cob who has been picking up wins in relatively easy events. Mess’n Around has four Black Type races on her resume, with 2nd in the Roamin Rachel Stakes on September 2, 2019 her best finish. She came 1 ¼ lengths short in the $100,000 event.

Mess’n Around went stakes racing after going 1st, 2nd, 1st, 1st, 1st racing in this class. Since finishing 2nd in the Roamin Rachel Stakes, she has finished 3rd, 3rd, 1st, 6th, 1st, 2nd, 1st. After 6th in the Willa On the Move Stakes on December 28, 2019, Mess’n Around dropped down in class and immediately thrived again. In her most recent race, she won over Stakes On a Plane by 4 ¾ lengths in February at Laurel Park. Mess’n Around is coming off a really strong workout on July 4 with a time of 46.40 seconds at 4 furlongs. The layoff shouldn’t be a problem for her. Consider a look at Mess’n Around in Race 9.

Post Time: 4:53 p.m. EST
Distance:1 Mile
Purse: $40,000

Race 10 is the second $40,000 event at Parx on Monday. This race will cover a mile of racing on the dirt. Irish Cork and Bird King should be two strong competitors in Race 10. Bird King is 1 for 5 in his career, with a win as a first-time runner on October 18, 2019 at Keeneland. It was a strong debut for Bird King, as he defeated Tiny Danza by 1 ¼ lengths in a $27,000 event. Since then, though, Bird King has finished 2nd, 2nd, 5th, so it’s been a bit tougher on him. In his latest outing, Bird King was out of form on March 10. He crossed the wire in 5th for a disappointing performance. Incite, who finished 3rd, had a 15 ¼ length lead on Bird King, so it wasn’t a close 5th either.

Off a four-month layoff, Bird King recently completed 4-furlong workouts with times of 49.02, 49.21, and 50.23 seconds. His most recent outing in the morning was on July 9, with a time of 50+ seconds. Bird King should have decent enough form to compete for the win in Race 10. He’s already been beaten badly by Irish Cork. Irish Cork and Bird King met in that March 10 race at Parx. Irish Cork finished 2nd in that race to lose by a nose at the wire. He nearly had a wire-to-wire win, but faltered late in the mile and 70-yard race. Irish Cork had the lead at the mile mark, but just ran out of gas.

Irish Cork has gone 1 for 6 in his career. He’s been in the top-3 in all six of his events. Irish Cork won on January 12 over Order for Porky in a 10 ¼ length blowout for a $41,200 purse. He was in the top-2 in four straight races before finishing 3rd on June 27 at Delaware Park. Consistency is Irish Cork’s middle name, and it would be surprising if he isn’t hanging around in the stretch once again. That kind of form should be respected. Irish Cork has already shown that he can beat the next best challenger in this race by a considerable distance. If Irish Cork shows up in that same form a trip to the winner’s circle is likely in the cards.
