Smoothlikebuttah, Stars of Bluegrass, and Miss Glorious are likely to have good runs in this race. They and four other horses will be competing for a $50,000 purse in a short race consisting of 4 ½ furlongs. This race is for 2-year-old fillies to get the day started at Santa Anita Park on Friday. Smoothlikebuttah will be making her debut on Friday in Race 1.

Rookie horses that have looked good in workouts can be dangerous. Smoothlikebuttah made three May workouts at 4 furlongs. She finished at 49.20 seconds, 48.20 seconds, and 49.40 seconds in her most recent workout on May 24. The fact her worst time was the most recent workout isn’t particularly concerning. She wasn’t that far off from the other two.

Stars of Bluegrass is making her debut in this one as well, just like most in this field. She has made just one 4-furlong workout, which came on May 16 finishing at 49 seconds. Stars of Bluegrass has been working out well, too, so it’s a toss-up between Smoothlikebuttah and Stars of Bluegrass.

Miss Glorious is not making her debut, and will be a second-time starter on Friday. She made her debut on May 17 and ran reasonably well for 4th. Miss Glorious was 1st at the ¼ pole and held firmly in 2nd at the top of the stretch. Weakened in the stretch, though, and Miss Glorious fell off to 4th. That was at 4 ½ furlongs. In her second performance there won’t be any surprises for her this time. Tough race here, but I think Miss Glorious pulls it out.

Post Time: 1:01 p.m. PST
Distance:5 ½ Furlongs

Race 2 is another short race at Santa Anita Fields on Friday. Six horses will run 5 ½ furlong for a $29,000 purse. Busy Paynter will likely be tested the most by Uno Trouble Maker from the No. 5 post. Uno Trouble Maker has won 6 of 17 races in her career. Her career includes a four-race winning streak from January 21, 2019 to June 2, 2019. Since then, though, Uno Trouble Maker has been unable to win after going up a class. She did show improved form in her most recent effort on January 24. After finishing 5th, 7th, 6th, Uno Trouble Maker did well to show in her most previous outing.

Uno Trouble Maker was good for 3rd, but will need more work to be able to win this event. She finished 4 ¼ lengths back of Eternal Endeavor for 2nd, so it wasn’t too close of a finish. That could change on Friday, though. Uno Trouble Maker will likely be involved in the stretch in this race. This isn’t the most difficult race out there, though I’m not too high on her recent workouts at 4 furlongs and 5 furlongs. On May 16, Uno Trouble Maker finished 4 furlongs with a time of 50.20 seconds and 5 furlongs at 1:02.00. If that form is on the table in Race 2 at Santa Anita Park today, then she will likely struggle to top Busy Paynter.

Busy Paynter enters off 3 wins in her previous 5 races. She notched back-to-back wins on January 10 and January 31. Busy Paynter beat Leading Indicator by 3 ¾ lengths and then a half length against Mongolian Humor in a dominant effort wire-to-wire. Overall in her career, Busy Paynter has been to the winner’s circle in 4 of 11 races in her career for a solid win percentage of 36%. Three of those wins were at Santa Anita Park. Following trying a race at a higher class and finishing 5th, Busy Paynter is back at a more comfortable level.

Post Time: 1:33 p.m. PST
Distance:5 ½ Furlongs

The final race of our Pick 3 card will hopefully be the final piece of a successful day at Santa Anita Park on Friday. Let’s Get Wild, Bella Chica, and Cassie Belle will be gunning for the top prize out of this tidy $50,000 purse. The feature race has a $51,000 purse today, so this is only a thousand short of that event.

Cassie Belle was in improved form in her last outing after finishing 4th in back-to-back races. She was able to move up a position to show at Santa Anita Park on March 31. Cassie Belle hasn’t won yet, but has threatened in a few races to place in two and show in one. Improved form will have to be on the menu on Friday, but a win is within reach.

Bella Chica is likely going to be more of a threat than Cassie Belle in this event. She has finished 2nd, 2nd, 3rd in three races in her career. In her most recent outing, Cassie Belle was 3rd on February 23rd after finishing 2nd in back-to-back races on January 11 and January 19. She completed two recent 5-furlong workouts in May at 1:02.00 and 1:02.20.

If it weren’t for Let’s Get Wild’s presence in this race, Cassie Belle would likely be in the best shape for a win here. Let’s Get Wild placed in back-to-back outings on January 25 and March 21. She beat eight horses in January, though came 4 ½ lengths short of a win in that performance. Two months later in March, Let’s Get Wild was in the same form to beat seven horses, including Cassie Belle by ¾ lengths, though 2 ½ lengths behind the winning horse. It should be a tight race between the three ponies I mentioned above, with a slim advantage to the horse from the No. 1 post position.
