We are off and running on Saturday afternoon at Aqueduct Racetrack. It’s a fairly big stakes day across the country, with at least 21 stakes events planned. The biggest spot for stakes racing on Saturday is at Fair Grounds. There are six events, including four graded races and a Road to the Kentucky Derby race. We have you covered with a few selections at Fair Grounds on Saturday afternoon. Aqueduct Racetrack and Santa Anita Park are a couple of the other big race tracks with cards on Saturday. We will make a stop in Queens at Aqueduct for this card.

Post Time: 1:00 p.m. EST
Distance:6 Furlongs

We will get started with Race 1 at Aqueduct Racetrack. Race 1 is a $50,000 event across 6 furlongs on the main track. Six horses are expected to participate, with Sicilia Mike and Dark Money likely front runners to get the win in this event. Sicilia Mike is 5 for 50 in his career, with some good form to note recently.

He has finished 1st, 1st, 7th, 3rd in his previous four outings. In his wins during that stretch, Sicilia Mike beat Eye Luv Lulu by ¾ lengths in a $82,000 event on December 30, 2019. Sicilia Mike followed up to defeat Clench by 1 ¼ lengths in a $70,000 event on February 8. That prompted a jump to the $200,000 Tom Fool Handicap (Gr. 3) on March 7.

Sicilia Mike discovered that race was too tough and finished 7th, playing no role in the race. In her most recent outing, Sicilia Mike showed 3rd in a $50,000 claiming event on December 21. He is capable of more than that, but we’ll see if the stakes entry did more harm than good to him. Dark Money should be tough to overcome in this event, though.

Dark Money is 6 for 18 in his career and is looking to get back to the winner’s circle since winning at Belmont Park on June 6. In his most recent attempt, Dark Money was ¾ lengths behind Steam Engine for the win in a $50,000 outing. This was after stepping down in class. He was in a bit better form than we saw Sicilia Mike recently, though they could engage in a duel in the stretch. Look for Dark Money to nip Sicilia Mike at the wire.

Distance:1 Mile

Race 2 runs for a mile on the dirt for a $35,000 purse. Seven horses are expected to hit the gate, with She’s An Alpha and Afleeting Glance going to be tough to top in this race. She’s An Alpha has been a consistent runner placing 2nd in four straight performances. In her most recent showing, She’s An Alpha finished behind Lady Cloverly by 2 ½ lengths.

Prior to that performance, She’s An Alpha was 2nd in a similar $14,350 event. She was behind by a neck in that contest. It was a race that could have gone in either direction. Tough luck for She’s An Alpha to fail to find the winner’s circle yet. In this assignment, expect her to come close at the wire. Winning could be tough up in class, but it isn’t the most difficult field to contend with. A win shouldn’t be that crazy to achieve.

Afleeting Glance might have something to say about that, though. She is winless in nine races, but has a good chance of striking today. In her previous six performances, Afleeting Glance finished 3rd, 2nd, 2nd, 5th, 2nd, DNF. She placed 2nd behind by 1 ¾ lengths in a $32,000 assignment. It’s the best effort of a horse in this race above the $30,000 level. She’s An Alpha came close, but that was for a $14,350 purse.

Afleeting Glance received a DNF after stumbling out of the gate and the rider was tossed on January 15. Tough break, but it can happen. She was expected to finish near the wire in that event as one of the favorites in the $35,000 race. Look for Afleeting Glance to bounce back in fine form against this competition on Saturday. I would support Afleeting Glance to deliver a winning performance here.

Race 3

(1) Lightning Rob (1A) Curlin’s Knight
+250 (5/2)
(2) Super Wicked Charm
+800 (8/1)
(3) I See the Stars
+500 (5/1)
(4) Pricing Exercise
+2000 (20/1)
(5) Royal Suspect
-125 (4/5)
(6) King of American
+1000 (10/1)
(7) Beta
+600 (6/1)

Post Time: 1:58 p.m. EST
Distance:1 Mile

One final selection for the early Daily Double and Pick 3 from Race 1-3. Race 3 is a $28,000 event over a mile on the dirt. Curlin’s Knight and Royal Suspect have to be noted on the shortlist. Curlin’s Knight is 1 for 35 in his career. He has finished 2nd, 7th, 5th, 2nd in his previous four entries. That isn’t too bad compared to the other participants in this race, and he was strong in his most recent outing on January 30.

Curlin’s Knight placed 2nd behind Kid Chocolate by 5 ¼ lengths in a $28,000 event. That was a good effort from Curlin’s Knight, and he’s going to have a teammate backing him up in Lightning Rob. Royal Suspect should give both of them a solid challenge. He is 1 for 10 in his career, and is coming off a productive showing as well. He placed 2nd behind Kingfish by ¾ lengths. That was close and could have easily gone to Royal Suspect with a little more effort.

Royal Suspect was gaining fast in that race following the ½ pole. He needed just a bit more room and I think he would have had the win. That was a 7-furlong event, so he’ll have an extra furlong to work with in this outing. Royal Suspect is going to have to work for a win in Race 3, but I think he can get it done to close out our Daily Double and Pick 3.
