We are back on the racetrack on Sunday with another look at the horse racing scene across the US. BetOnline is offering seven tracks for betting on Sunday through the afternoon and evening. The biggest event of the day can be found at Aqueduct with the running of the $100,000 Bay Ridge Stakes. That’s the only stakes race that is on the card Sunday.
Largent was the big winner of the $200,000 Fort Lauderdale Stakes Gr. 2 on Saturday afternoon. It marked the 180th stakes win for Todd Pletcher at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach. No surprise that a Fletcher horse won another race at Gulfstream on Saturday. There is only one stakes race on Sunday with the Bay Ridge Stakes, which we have covered below for Race 3.
We’ll be at Aqueduct Racetrack in New York to check out the action. A nine racecard with $496,000 in prize money is on the table. This is the biggest card in the country on Sunday. There are a couple of big races in Japan today, but not much else going on. That certainly doesn’t mean we can’t have a winning day. Head below for our free Aqueduct Racetrack picks for December 13, 2020.
Post Time: 12:20 p.m. EST
We will open Sunday at Aqueduct Racetrack with Race 1. The event is a 6-furlong event for $32,000 on the dirt. We could have a duel between Crick and Wings of Fire in the stretch. Wings of Fire is making her debut on Sunday after getting some work done in the morning. She was clocked at 50.41, 50.24, and 51.22 seconds at 4 furlongs.
Wings of Fire was bought for $90,000 in 2018 and should compete in this class. This should be the kind of race that gives her a good chance of winning as a first-time runner on Sunday. Crick has experience with appearances in 12 races in her career. She has placed 2nd several times, though, having placed in 5 of 12 events.
Crick placed back-to-back on September 24 and November 16. That was in a $32,000 race behind Mind of Gold by 3 lengths, and then placed behind Mebs Web by a nose in another $32,000 event. After moving up in class, Crick struggled to perform in a $35,000 race and finished 9th. There were some tough horses in that event in nowhere comparable to what Crick will see today. I will back Crick to see the winner’s circle.
Race 3 – Bay Ridge Stakes
Post Time: 1:18 p.m. EST
Distance:1 ⅛ Miles
Race 3 is the feature event at Aqueduct Racetrack, which features 1 ⅛ miles of racing for a $100,000 purse on the main track. Mrs. Orb and Lucky Move are the most likely candidates to have a big run in the stretch. Mrs. Orb gets the nod from the outside and should have a strong run here. She is 5 for 21 in her career and in great form since June.
After a four-month layoff, Mrs. Orb, who is related to Orb, has placed 2nd in four straight performances. Mrs. Orb just completed her first graded race on November 7. She placed 2nd behind Royal Flag in the $100,000 Turnback the Alarm Handicap Gr. 3. Mrs. Orb was 2 ¼ lengths short of a win in that event. Mrs. Orb will take another chance on a $100,000 race on Sunday.
Resistance should be felt from the No. 1 horse, Lucky Move. Lucky Move is a recent winner on October 24 in the $175,000 Empire Distaff Handicap (Black Type) over Mrs. Orb by 1 ¾ lengths. She competed in some tough events in the summer, including the $400,000 Delaware Handicap Gr. 2 and $125,000 Shuvee Stakes Gr. 3. After the $175,000 win, Lucky Move and Mrs. Orb meet again for a $100,000 purse. It should be the same story, with Lucky Move holding off Mrs. Orb for a win.
Post Time: 3:45 p.m. EST
Race 8 is for a handsome prize of $84,000 at Aqueduct on Sunday. It should be a good outing between Foxtail and Daphne Moon. The No. 1 horse, Ujjayi, can’t be completely discounted as well. Daphne Moon is 2 for 6 in her career, with a couple of wins in a $90,000 event in her debut run on August 4, 2019, and then a $61,000 event by ¾ lengths most recently on March 29.
Daphne Moon finished 4th in the $80,000 May 1, and then placed 2nd in her latest outing on October 18 in a $46,350 outing. That had to be the biggest disappointment of her career so far, but Landing Moon is a good horse and proved to be the best by 4 ¾ lengths. The form that she had in 2019 for her $90,000 event doesn’t seem to be present any longer.
Foxtail is 7 for 22 in her career and in excellent form. She has finished 1st, 1st, 3rd, 1st, 1st in her previous five entries. Foxtail will seek a hat-trick on Sunday. She was a 15 ½ length winner in a blowout over Niko’s Dream in a $76,000 event on September 3 at Saratoga. Foxtail followed up for another win on October 4 to win by 2 ½ lengths over Jennemily. This looks like a manageable outing for Foxtail on Sunday.
