Aqueduct Racetrack Selections for January 23, 2021 – Horse Racing Picks

Saturday is a day for Gulfstream Park to take center stage in Hallandale Beach. The running of the $3,000,000 Pegasus World Cup is the feature race of the month in January. It’s the biggest stakes event since the Breeders’ Cup Classic in November. We have you covered at TheSportsGeek for the Pegasus at Gulfstream Park, along with the turf race and an additional selection for the Fred W. Hooper Stakes. Gulfstream Park isn’t the only track that should command your attention, though. There are several other racecourses with big cards on Saturday. Aqueduct Racetrack has one stakes race today with the running of the $100,000 Jazil Stakes.

Post Time: 12:20 p.m. EST
Distance:7 Furlongs

Race 1 is our first selection at Aqueduct Racetrack on Saturday afternoon. The first race at Aqueduct is a 7-furlong event for a nice purse of $80,000. Hybrid Eclipse and Maracuja are of interest in Race 1 on Saturday. Hybrid Eclipse is winless in three races, but should stand a decent chance of striking against this competition.

She placed 2nd two races ago on November 20 in the best effort of her career. Hybrid Eclipse placed 2nd behind Rock Star Parking by a head in a $45,000 race. In her other two outings, Hybrid Eclipse struggled to compete, finishing 4th and 7th. She finished 7th in her latest performance on December 26 at Turfway Park.

Hybrid Eclipse wasn’t anywhere to be found in the $32,000 assignment and was a big disappointment. In any case, she’s looked better in the morning since that outing and should do better here despite the class hike. Hybrid Eclipse completed 4 furlongs in 49.83 seconds on January 10.

Maracuja placed 2nd behind R Working Girl by a neck in a $80,000 debut. She is expected to be a consistent performer throughout her career and started off in good form. Maracuja was purchased for $200,000 in August of 2019 and should be able to navigate through this beatable field.

(5) Backsideofthemoon
+140 (7/5)

Post Time: 1:20 p.m. EST
Distance:1 ⅛ Miles

The Jazil Stakes is the feature event at Aqueduct Racetrack on Saturday. The $100,000 contest covers 1 ⅛ miles on the main track. It’s a small field of five horses, with Musical Heart and Backsideofthemoon on my shortlist to get the top prize. Musical Heart gets the inside rail out of the gate and should run well.

He has been in the top-2 in five straight performances, and it’s hard to see him falling off on Saturday. In his most recent win, Musical Heart beat Creative Style by 4 ¾ lengths to win at the $57,000 level. Since then, Musical Heart has placed 2nd in three straight outings. In his most recent try, he placed 2nd behind Backsideofthemoon by 6 lengths in the $100,000 Queens County Stakes.

Backsideofthemoon is in nice form at the moment and has his eyes set on a hat-trick Saturday. He’s finished 2nd, 1st, 1st in his previous three outings. Overall, Backsideofthemoon is 8 for 47 in his career. Backsideofthemoon beat Musical Heart by a neck on November 13 in a $84,000 event. They would meet again on December 19 in a rematch.

This time it was a stakes event for $100,000 in the Queens County Stakes. As noted above, Backsideofthemoon defeated Musical Heart by 6 lengths. It was a wire-to-wire win for Backsideofthemoon and total domination. Backsideofthemoon is back in another showdown against Musical Heart. Starting from the outside might look bad, but with only five horses, and this event going 1 ⅛ miles, that should have a minimal impact. I will side with the No. 5 horse to get the win to complete a hat-trick.
