Canterbury Park Selections for September 9, 2020 – Horse Racing Picks

Wednesday is another slowish day on the horse racing circuit with only one notable stakes race. Kentucky Downs gets their fall meet started with the $300,000 Tapit Stakes. That might be the biggest stakes race of the day, but Canterbury Park has six $100,000 stakes races on offer. It’s a big day for the small track in Minnesota. They typically offer racecards in the $100,000 to $200,000 range, so a jump to $843,100 is something to get excited about for the horsemen at Canterbury Park.

BetOnline doesn’t have a Kentucky Downs card up for Wednesday, yet anyway. I’ll focus on Canterbury Park for now, and hopefully later in the morning there will be something up for Kentucky Downs. There are a total of 12 races at Canterbury Park on Wednesday. For them that’s a pretty big deal.

We’ll take a look at three races and hope for the best on the race course. There is a mix of thoroughbred and quarter horse racing at Canterbury tonight, which is a nice change up from the usual. Yesterday was an uneventful day, as I had several horses come up just short to place but not win. Head below for our free Canterbury Park picks for September 9, 2020.

Post Time: 6:10 p.m. CST
Distance: 6 Furlongs
Purse: $100,000

The first stakes race of the day at Canterbury Park is the Bella Norte Minnesota Distaff Sprint Stakes in Race 5. Six horses are expected to participate in the event, which will cover 6 furlongs on the dirt for $100,000. Pinup Girl and Ready to Runaway should both run in the mix in this one.

Pinup Girl has finished in the top-3 in four straight races and has some decent form going into Wednesday.Overall in her career, Pinup Girl has won 8 out of 27 events. In her most recent entries, Pinup Girl placed 2nd on July 27 in a $32,000 event and then followed up for 3rd in the $50,000 Glitter Star Stakes on August 19.

Her most recent win was on September 2, 2018, so it’s been a long minute before she has headed to the winner’s circle. Winless in 12 straight races, Pinup Girl has at least been competitive to consistently finish near the front, though.

Ready to Runaway was up against Pinup Girl on July 27 and August 19 in the races I noted above. Ready to Runaway wasn’t close to Pinup Girl, as she pulled away for an 11 length win in the July meeting, and then dispatched Clickbait by 8 ½ lengths in her next appearance. Pinup Girl was way behind, as Ready to Runaway cleared her by 12 ½ lengths.

Clickbait is a better horse than any of her opponents in Race 5 today, and she cleared her with ease. If Ready to Runaway wants to run today, a win in the Bella Norte Minnesota Distaff Sprint Stakes should be a plate for her.

Post Time: 10:10 p.m. CST
Distance:350 Yards

This is a quarter horse race at Canterbury on Wednesday night. It’s drag racing on a horse. This event will go 350 yards on the dirt. Sweet Carol Line and Western Reverse must be considered for your shortlist. Sweet Carol Line is 2 for 5 in her career and coming off a productive run on August 25.

She won with a time of 18.009 seconds at 350 yards for a $6,500 purse. This race is way the heck up in class. It’s not very comparable going from $6,500 to $70,350, but Sweet Carol Line beat Furiousity, Moonin the Line, and Shimpree in that race. All three of those horses will be participating in Race 11.

Sweet Carol Line beat Furiousity by a neck to get the win in that performance. In her other outing, Sweet Carol Line defeated Queen of Da Nort by a half length in a $11,500 race on July 2. In her other three races, Sweet Carol Line was a no show, though, finishing 10th, 4th, 9th.

If she didn’t have to deal with Wetern Reverse, then I’d feel comfortable giving her the edge. However, Western Reserve is expected to be in the gate for this one. Western Reserve is 3 for 4 in her career, with a win in the Gopher State Futurity Trial on June 17. After finishing 7th in the Gopher State Futurity, Western Reserve came back to win two in a row.

In her most recent outing, Western Reserve beat Corona White Socks by a half length with a time of 18.065 seconds at 350 yards. Prior to that race, Western Reserve beat Shadi Lady by a half length with a time of 17.029 seconds at 330 yards. Expect a close one between Western Reserve and Sweet Carol Line, with Western Reserve edging her out.

+2000 (20/1)

Post Time: 10:40 p.m. CST
Distance:400 Yards
Purse: $67,250

A 400-yard quarter horse race will close out the day at Canterbury Park. It’s a late race that likely won’t get going until past 11:00 p.m. CST. This event is for $67,250 on the dirt. Vo Fantasti Aira and Beep Beep Zoom Zoom should have a strong case for the top prize in Race 12. Beep Beep Zoom Zoom can get it done from the No. 3 post position. She is 2 for 12 in her career with a couple of good performances recently.

Beep Beep Zoom Zoom placed 2nd with a time of 15.770 seconds on July 28. She finished a nose behind Beep Beep Zoom Zoom to come just short. Beep Beep Zoom Zoom followed up in 4th in her next performance, but placed again on August 25 with a time of 20.153 seconds at 400 yards. She lost that event by a half length as a slight second favorite.

That might be good enough to win on Wednesday night in Minnesota. Vo Fantastic Aira is on a heater at the moment, though, and should be tough to beat. He is a winner in three straight races and looking for a fourth tonight. Vo Fantastic Aira won with a time of 18.067 seconds at 350 yards on August 11, and then followed up for another win shortly thereafter on August 25.

He came back to win again with a time of 20.085 seconds over Beep Beep Zoom Zoom by a half length. Beep Beep Zoom Zoom was up early, but Vo Fantastic Aira took over the race and blasted past her to get the win. He is feeling great right now and should be able to find the winner’s circle for the fourth straight time on Wednesday night.
