Churchill Downs is back racing for the third consecutive racing after opening on May 16. It feels a bit weird that it’s June 4 and the Kentucky Derby still hasn’t been run at Churchill Downs. We will have to wait until Labor Day Weekend for the Kentucky Derby. However, the Belmont Stakes is right around the corner on June 20. That will count as the first leg of the Triple Crown, and the biggest sporting event we’ve had in a long time. Churchill Downs is hosting nine races on Thursday afternoon.Saturday is a huge day for horse racing. There are more graded events this weekend in a long time.
Churchill Downs will have two, Belmont Park four, Gulfstream Park three, and the biggest of all will take place at Santa Anita Park. Santa Anita Park will have seven stakes races, including the Santa Anita Derby. That’s a big race for a $400,000 purse. It also comes with points for the Road to the Kentucky Derby. In total, there are 19 stakes races on Saturday. There is nothing of the sort at Churchill Downs on Thursday, but let’s see what we can do with this card. Head below for our free Churchill Downs Pick 3 and Pick 4 selections for June 4, 2020.
Pick 3: Race 1-3
Pick 4: Race 1-4

Distance: 6 Furlongs
6 furlongs for a $29,000 purse will get us started at Churchill Downs on Thursday afternoon. Skyvalue and Foreign Exchange are both going to present bold bids in this one. The way I see it, this is a race between Skyvalue and Foreign Exchange. Skyvalue is going into her third race in her career today. She looked good in each of her first two outings.
Skyvalue showed on March 19 and then won on April 18. In the win for Skyvalue, she took over the lead at the ¼ pole and didn’t give it up. Skyvalue won by 2 ½ lengths over Collude in a solid performance. Recent workouts at 4 furlongs all have times below 50 seconds for Skyvalue since May 14.
Foreign Exchange enters the tenth race of her career on Thursday. Much of her success is dictated by the race. Races at higher classes haven’t generated good results, but Foregin Exchange has taken advantage of fields like this in the past. She has won 2 of her previous 4 races, with wins on February 8 and April 19 at Oaklawn Park.
In her first win, Foreign Exchange edged out House Drunk by 3 lengths, and then a half length over Stalemate in April. That kind of production prompted a rise in class for a bigger purse. That went horribly, as Foreign Exchange finished 7th in a tough race. Now it’s back down a notch for Foreign Exchange in an easier assignment. That should help immensely.

Distance:1 1/16 Miles
Race 2 will feature 1 1/16 miles of racing for a $31,000 purse. Eight horses are signed up for the event, with Urbanite and Lord Dragon on my shortlist. Urban Light has a chance, but I’d like something more than +350 on the morning-line. Lord Dragon is down a class after struggling since a stakes race on March 9. He finished 11th in the Lambholm South Tampa Bay Derby, (Gr. 2) and then hasn’t been able to get back on track since.
He dropped in class and hasn’t been in a stakes race since, but has finished 7th, 4th, 7th, 4th since that performance. Urbanite is coming off a tremendous outing after racing against harder competition. He finished 4th, 9th, 8th and then found easier pastures on April 23. That was a win for Urbanite in his most recent race, as he won by 3 lengths over Marquee Thunder. Urbanite remains around the same class level for Thursday. This is going to be slightly harder, but nothing he shouldn’t be able to handle.

We move on to Race 3 at Churchill Downs, which will decide our Pick 3 fate if we correctly got the first two races right. Flashy Biz and Freshman Class are expected to have solid runs in this event. I’d say that Carefree Highway is going to be in this race as well. Carefree Highway has finished 5th, 10th, 10th, 4th in the first four races of her career. This is the easiest event that Carefree Highway has entered in. After finishing 4th in a much harder race, Carefree Highway has to be considered here. The value looks good on the morning-line at +400.
Flashy Biz has not been getting anywhere since going up in class. She finished 2nd, 4rd, 3rd, 2nd and then went up to face tougher competition. It wasn’t successful and it probably took a race or two too long to bring her down to a level where she feels comfortable. Flashy Biz finished 7th, 7th, 7th, 5th, 6th in her previous five outings. This assignment is easier, but it’s still not going to result in an auto-win. Flashy Biz has been winless in her 11-race career.
Freshman Class doesn’t have the most impressive resume either. However, she has been better against the same competition that Flashy Biz and Carefree Highway were running against. Freshman Class has finished 6th, 4th, 3rd, 4th, 6th in her career. Despite those results, Freshman Class has looked great in recent workouts. Freshman Class was quick with times of 47.80 seconds at 4 furlongs, 1:00.08 at 5 furlongs, and 37 seconds at 3 furlongs in her most recent workout. Conversely, Flashy Biz has two 5 furlong workouts with times of 1:01.20 and 1:01.60. I’m on Freshman Class to get things done from the No. 9 post position.

A nice purse of $79,000 is on offer in Race 4 at Churchill Downs today. Fourteen 2-year-old fillies are entered into this event, with an inexperienced field getting a chance at a nice purse. Road to Romance and Illegal Smile will likely be within reach of a win here. Midyear and Little Jewel have a decent opportunity for a win here as well. Little Jewel has been in good form in her last two workouts, completing 4 furlongs at 47.20 and 48.80 seconds. Midyear has been good as well, with times of 49 seconds and 49.40 seconds in recent morning workouts.
Illegal Smile has been looking sharp as well, with times of 48.40 seconds at 4 furlongs and 35.40 seconds at 3 furlongs. She was auctioned off last year and her owner got a deal for a price tag of just $38,266. With Road to Romance, she is expected to win and win now. This 2-year-old was purchased for $275,000 and with that kind of price she’s expected to produce, at least at this level of racing anyway. She is by far the most expensive horse in this event. Expect Road to Romance to follow through as a first-time starter.
