We’re off and running on Wednesday on the racetrack with two more cards at BetOnline. The BetOnline racebook has a healthy slate of 11 racecourses available for wagering this afternoon and evening. There are three evening cards in the east, with Penn National, Charles Town, and Mountaineer Park all with a racecard tonight. Charles Town and Mountaineer are both located in West Virginia, with post time scheduled for 7:00 p.m. EST.
You can play the ponies from the early afternoon hours, and if you’re on the west coast, the morning, until the sun goes down. Before we go further into the spring, it’s important to keep your composure and not overreach with your bankroll. There are going to be many more options available for wagering, so make sure to play what you like and not chase losses or play purely out of boredom. Horse racing is supposed to be fun, but you also don’t want to throw away your bankroll in a week.
We will open the day at Churchill Downs, the home of the 147th Kentucky Derby on Saturday. Advance wagering is available at BetOnline for the Kentucky Derby and the rest of the card. For today Churchill Downs, there are ten races worth a total of $850,300 in prize money. Head below for our free Churchill Downs picks for April 28, 2021.
Post Time: 1:15 p.m. EST
Race 2 covers 6 furlongs for a $42,900 purse on Wednesday afternoon at Churchill Downs. We have a competitive field that I’ve shortlisted to Petit Verdot and Toobadsosad should have a strong presence in the stretch. Petit Verdot is a one-time winner in eight assignments.
He was a winner in the summer on July 31 in a $37,000 event over Emerald Forest by 6 ½ lengths. That was a good run for Petit Verdot, but he’s failed to get into the winner’s circle since then in tougher revents.
Petit Verdot finished 6th, 6th, 6th, 5th in his last four attempts. He finished 5th in his most recent appearance on April 14 in a $23,000 event. That was disappointing after he faded late. This is in a higher class, but the competition hasn’t been too hot either. Toobadsosad has had the most success as of late.
Toobadsosad is 2 for 5 in his career, with finishes of 1st, 4th, 1st, 4th, 3rd in five performances. In his most recent win, Toobadsosad edged out a foe by a neck for a $37,000 win. Toobadsosad came back to go 4th and 3rd. He showed 3rd most recently on April 3 in a $50,000 event. Back down in class, this looks like a good value bet on Toobadsosad.
Post Time: 2:15 p.m. EST
Distance:1 1/16 Miles
Race 4 is a $49,700 event covering 1 1/16 miles on the turf. Screenwriter and Tynan should be there at the wire. Tynan for a decent value play, but she might have to catch a break somewhere to win. Tynan is a two-time winner in ten performances. She most recently won a wire-to-wire race on July 19 by a length for a $38,000 purse.
That was a nice stretch that saw Tynan go 2nd, 2nd, 1st, 1st, but has found it tougher up in class. In her most recent appearance, Tynan finished 4th for a $31,000 purse. This is a $225,000 horse that should be expected to run at this level, but she is still trying to find her way. Encouraging results in workouts recently with a time of 47 and 48 seconds at 4 furlongs.
Screenwriter is 2 for 19 in her career, with her most recent win on March 4. That was her last outing after going 2nd, 2nd, 2nd, 4th. Screenwriter beat Europa by 1 ¾ lengths in a $14,000 assignment. That was far too easy for Screenwriter. She was in control of that race and didn’t waver much going into the stretch. This is tougher, but she’s proven to run good in this class before. The No. 1 should have success.
Race 9 – Kentucky Juvenile Stakes
Post Time: 4:52 p.m. EST
It’s feature time at Churchill Downs on Wednesday afternoon. Eight horses are scheduled to compete for a $150,000 purse on the main track in the Kentucky Juvenile Stakes. Kaufymaker and Averly Jane should be watched closely in this one. Kaufymaker beat Bode by You in an impressive 6 ¼ length win as a first-time runner on April 15.
That was for a $60,000 purse so this is going to be considerably tougher. If he runs like that again, she is going to be real close at the wire, though. Expect Kaufymaker to make some noise. She is likely the biggest threat to Averly Jane, who is coming off a promising debut, too. Averly Jane won as a first-time starter as well.
She beat She’s So Shiny in a blowout by 8 ¾ lengths at the wire for a $60,000 purse. Averly Jane drew clear going into the stretch and didn’t look back. No one was keeping up with her after the race got into the stretch. Note that this was after a bumped start. She didn’t break clean out of the gate and still blew away the competition. I would back Averly Jane here to go back-to-back to open her career
