Delta Downs Daily Double Pick for January 12, 2021 – Horse Racing Picks

It was a big day at Delta Downs on Monday with a clean sweep. Three horses and three winners, including a 6/1 horse that came through on Laurieann. It’s hard to complain about a day like that. Delta Downs is back on Tuesday, along with Turf Paradise and Parx in Philadelphia. We have picks at Turf Paradise in Phoenix on Tuesday as well. Turf Paradise recently returned for their winter meet after a long delay.

It wasn’t because of Covid-19, but that was the excuse. It appears that the real reason was because of a dispute over simulcasting in Arizona. That’s been ironed out, and racing has resumed at Turf Paradise in the desert. While I’m hoping for the best at Turf Paradise, another perfect day at Delta Downs would be nice, too. The Louisiana based racetrack has nine races on the docket on Tuesday. A total of $281,000 in prize money is available on the Tuesday card in Louisiana. Delta Downs has two $75,000 stakes races expected to run today. Head below for our free Delta Downs Daily Double pick for January 12, 2021.

Race 2 is one of two stakes races at Delta Downs on Tuesday. The running of the Louisiana Jewel Stakes is a 7 ½ furlong event for a $75,000 purse. Taylor Avenue and Australasia should get into a battle in the stretch for the grand prize in Race 2. Taylor Avenue is 1 for 3 in her career after finishing 1st, 3rd, 2nd to open things up.

She beat Double Whopper by a half length in a $31,000 assignment to open her career. The filly followed up to show 3rd on November 12 in a $32,500 allowance race. Improvement was noted in Taylor Avenue’s latest outing on December 12 in the $100,000 Louisiana Champions Day Lassie Stakes.

Taylor Avenue placed 2nd behind Big Time by 3 ½ lengths. Despite the loss, that was a great effort by Taylor Avenue and a nice payday to get place money. There’s a good chance of a win for Taylor Avenue, but she will have to contend with Australasia for the victory in this one.

The $130,000 Australasia lived up to the price tag on December 20 in her debut. Australasia defeated Smittys Barclays by 8 ¼ lengths in a $47,000 event. That was very impressive from Australasia. If Australasia continues on that path, then a $75,000 event shouldn’t pose too many problems for her. I’m going to side with Australasia to cash in with a win in the Louisiana Jewel Stakes.

Post Time: 1:49 p.m. MST
Distance:6 ½ Furlongs

The second leg of our Daily Double is Race 3, a $35,000 event covering 6 ½ furlongs on the main track. Track Smart and Fasthappy are likely going to meet in the stretch and perhaps get into a duel. They are in the best form at the moment, with the others just trying to find something positive on Tuesday. Upsets certainly happen, but no other horses have shown the ability to come close recently.

Track Smart was in good form in the second race of her career. She finished 4th as a first-time winner on November 27 in a $35,000 event. That wasn’t a bad outing as a rookie, and Track Smart came on hard in her next performance. Track Smart placed 2nd behind Clearly Sailing by a neck in another $35,000 assignment. That was a nice improvement as a big underdog. Expect Track Smart to run a close race yet again on Tuesday afternoon.

Fasthappy is winless in two career races, and like Track Smart, improved after making her debut. She finished 5th on November 27 in a $35,000 event, and then came on much better on December 28. Fasthappy placed 2nd behind She a Hot Mess by 1 ½ lengths in a $30,000 assignment. It was a solid effort, and if Fasthappy had more room to work with, then she might have won.

Fasthappy was coming on strong in the stretch and just ran out of track. I’m leaning towards Track Smart in this one. She is starting from a more favorable post position, while Fasthappy will have to fight through traffic in a hurry at 6 ½ furlongs. I’m going to side with Track Smart to get the win in this $35,000 event.
