We press forward to Monday after a profitable day on Sunday. Fair Grounds was our big winner yesterday on a Daily Double. Race 2 and Race 3 both came through, with the coupled pair of Caviar Resolution and Staceys Racey cashing in our favor to complete the multi. We took a split at Santa Anita Park, but that was good enough for a winning day on Sunday. Monday is always a slow day when it comes to horse racing, and that’s no exception this week. There are three racecourses with cards on Monday, including at Delta Downs, Parx, and Turf Paradise. Fortunately, Turf Paradise settled out their differences and are back to racing in the desert in Phoenix after an extended delay. They were scheduled to begin racing in the fall, but the meet was pushed back to about a week ago.
We will get going on Monday at Delta Downs in the afternoon in Louisiana. Delta Downs has nine races worth a total of $227,000 in prize money available today. At a track that mostly has cards below the $200,000 mark, this is a nice day to have some entries in races at Delta Downs for the horsemen in Louisiana. Head below for our free Delta Downs picks for January 11, 2021.
Race 2 – Louisiana Legacy Stakes
Post Time: 1:22 p.m. CST
Distance:7 ½ Furlongs
Race 2 is the feature race at Delta Downs and is one of two stakes races today. These are the only stakes events on Monday in the US. The Louisiana Legacy Stakes is worth $75,000 for 7 ½ furlongs of racing on the main track. Standing Perfect and Chu Chu’s Legacy should be involved in the stretch in this event. Standing Perfect has gone 1st and 2nd in his career and is coming off an appearance in the $100,000 Louisiana Champions Day Juvenile on December 12.
He placed 2nd behind Sir Wellington by 2 lengths in a good effort as an underdog. Prior to that outing, Standing Perfect beat One Time Gem by 1 ¼ lengths in a $19,500 event. The hike in class didn’t bother Standing Perfect at all. Expect Standing Perfect to be right near the front at the wire again, with a chance to be at the front and winning this race over Chu Chu’s Legacy. That’s not going to be an easy chore, though.
Chu Chu’s Legacy is 3 for 5 and was looking for four straight wins in the Louisiana Champions Day. That didn’t go well for Chu Chu’s Legacy, as he was uncharacteristically out of form. In his most recent win, Chu Chu’s Legacy defeated Janets Jay Jay by 3 ½ lengths in the $50,000 Louisiana Cup Juvenile Stakes on December 12. He didn’t follow up, though, with Standing Perfect finishing well ahead for 2nd while Chu Chu’s Legacy was 5th. I will take the better price on Standing Perfect to maintain his surprising early form in his career.
Post Time: 1:49 p.m. CST
Distance:6 ½ Furlongs
Race 3 is our next selection at Delta Downs on Monday. If you want to make it a Daily Double, then you can with Race 2. I’m going to keep it a single, though. Gimmeasound and Sarah’s Vision look like interesting prospects in this event. Gimmeasound is winless in two races, but could come close in this race. He has finished 3rd and 4th in his career so far.
As a first-time runner on November 28, Gimmeasound showed 3rd on November 28 in a $35,000 event. Not a bad try, but Gimmeasound regressed to 4th in his next outing on December 22 in the same class. This isn’t the most difficult of $35,000 races, so I believe Gimmeasound can move up from that and possibly do better from his debut. If improvement is made, then Gimmeasound can get into the winner’s circle.
Sarah’s Vision is winless in six-career races, but has looked really good in many of those performances. He placed 2nd behind Ebony Flash by 1 ¼ lengths on November 28 in a $35,000 assignment. Sarah’s Vision returned on December 28 to finish 4th in a $42,000 event. Back down in class, expect a better run for Sarah’s Vision on Monday. A win appears within her sights if she runs a similar race in Race 3.
Post Time: 3:11 p.m. CST
Race 6 is our final selection at Delta Downs for the afternoon. This race covers a mile on the main track for a $32,000 purse. It should be an entertaining battle between Ashley’s New Shoes and Laurieann in the stretch of this one. Laurieann might be 6/1 on the morning-line, but should probably be more of a favorite than that indicates.
She is 2 for 6 in her career and feeling good recently. Laurieann has gone 1st, 1st, 2nd in her previous three entries. Laurieann won on February 1 by 1 length in a $30,000 event, and then followed through for another win on November 7 to make it back-to-back wins. She cleared True Friend by 1 ¾ lengths in a $12,500 assignment for easy work at that level.
In her debut at Delta Downs, Laurieann placed 2nd behind Could You by ¾ lengths in a $20,000 event. This is up in class, but she has proven to run well in this class and win previously. Ashley’s New Shoes might be tough to shake, but should be near the front with a chance to strike. Ashley’s New Shoes is eyeing a hat-trick on Monday.
She beat Hallajoori on December 8 by 3 ½ lengths in a $30,000 to inch clear late in the stretch. Following that race, Ashley’s New Shoes beat Aura by a length in another $31,000 event. While Ashley’s New Shoes is in good form right now, I will take my chances on another horse in good form at a better price on Monday in Race 6.
