Fair Grounds Race Course Selections for January 14, 2021 – Horse Racing Picks

Fair Grounds Race Course Selections for January 14, 2021 – Horse Racing Picks

There is plenty of more horse racing on Thursday throughout the country. BetOnline is offering six racetracks for thoroughbred wagering. There will likely be three or four harness racing tracks open for wagering as well. Yonkers in New York is the most notable harness track that is currently in the midst of a meet. As far as thoroughbreds are concerned, Fair Grounds and Gulfstream Park are the biggest racecourses operating today.

Fair Grounds is a big weekend ahead, which includes the $200,000 Lecomte Stakes (Gr. 3), which comes with points towards the Kentucky Derby. This is the first prep event for the Derby believe it or not. It feels like we just got done with the 2020 Triple Crown season, and we did. The Triple Crown was completed in October after a lengthy delay. Now we quickly turn around and get right into the 2021 Triple Crown season soon.

We will get started in Louisiana at Fair Grounds. Fair Grounds has nine races on the schedule worth a total of $309,000. There are no stakes races at Fair Grounds today, but will have several on Saturday, with a total of $1,160,000 in prize money available. Post Time: 1:00 p.m. CST
Distance:6 Furlongs
Purse:$17,000

Our first look at Fair Grounds is the first race of the day in Louisiana. Race 1 covers 6 furlongs on the main track for a $17,000 purse. Get Directions and Money IntheStarrs should be hot commodities in this event. Get Directions has two wins in her previous three outings. She is 2 for 9 in her career, so Get Directions is in the best form of her career recently.

Get Directions beat Slinghotslew by 6 ¼ lengths in a $17,000 event in a wire-to-wire race. She couldn’t follow up in her next outing to finish 5th in a $12,000 event. However, Get Directions was in much better form on December 11 to beat Dancin All Alone by 3 ¾ lengths in a $14,000 race. That loss at $12,000 could have been an outlier for Get Directions. Money Inthe Starrs is going to be a tough out for Get Directions and others.

Money Inthe Starrs is 2 for 10 in her career with a couple of solid recent runs as well. This is a sizable drop in class for Money Inthe Starrs after running at Keeneland and Churchill DOwns. Three races ago on October 16, Money IntheStarrs placed 2nd behind Hetty G. by 1 ¾ lengths in a $20,000 assignment. In her most recent outing, she was 1 ¼ lengths behind Two Sixtyone. I like Money Inthe Starrs to pull away in the stretch from this field.

Post Time: 1:29 p.m. CST
Distance:1 Mile
Purse:$48,000

We will get to Race 2 right after the first race of the day at Fair Grounds. This is worth more money, with a $48,000 purse on the line across a mile of racing on the turf. It’s likely a good one between Budro Talking and Ninety One Assault in the stretch. Budro Talking is 8 for 25 in his career, finishing 2nd, 1st, 1st, 6th in his previous four performances.

He was a winner of the $50,000 Louisiana Cup Turf Classic Stakes by 1 1/4 lengths over Nippy Red on September 19, but struggled in his most recent assignment on December 12 in the $100,000 Champions Day Turf Stakes. Back down in class, expect a better performance from Budro Talking. Ninety One Assault was in that race and cleared Budro Talking with ease.

In fact, Ninety One Assault won the race over Afleet Ascent by 1 length. It was her fourth win in her last seven performances. He was also a winner of the $60,000 Dixie Poker Ace Stakes earlier in 2020. Despite not winning the $100,000 Henry S. Clark Stakes on September 7, Ninety One Assault placed 2nd behind Doctor Mounty by 1 ¾ lengths. This looks like a winnable run for Ninety One Assault on Thursday.

Post Time: 3:25 p.m. CST
Distance:1 1/16 Miles
Purse:$46,000

Our final selection at Fair Grounds is another event on the grass. This race goes for 1 1/16 miles on the turf for a $46,000 purse. Attorney Tim and Toma Todo are likely the ones to get past in this race. Toma Todo has finished in the top-3. She has stakes experience, with appearances in the Texas Turf Mile Stakes, John Battaglia Memorial Stakes, and Jeff Ruby Steaks (Gr. 3).

The Jeff Ruby was his trickiest race, and the result showed, with Toma Todo finishing 10th on March 14. He ran well in the others, but wasn’t able to win. In his most recent effort, Toma Todo showed 3rd on December 17 in a $43,000 allowance outing. Toma Todo finished 3 ½ lengths behind Attorney Tim for 2nd.

Attorney Tim was better liked by the public, and should have the upperhand in this race as well. Attorney Tim is 1 for 13 in his career, having placed 2nd in back-to-back outings on November 12 and December 17. He placed 2nd behind Telephone Talker by a head, and then Attorney Tim placed 2nd behind Alfons Walde by a half length in the race I noted above against Toma Todo. Attorney Tim looks like the horse in Race 6.
