Florida Derby Pick and Gulfstream Park Best Bets for April 2, 2022

Florida Derby Pick and Gulfstream Park Best Bets for April 2, 2022

It’s a big stakes day in the US, as there are three notable prep races on the card. The $1,250,000 Arkansas Derby (Gr. 1) is the feature event with the most money available to be won.

All three races, including the Arkansas Derby, Florida Derby, and Jeff Ruby Stakes all have 100-40-20-10 in points available to be won. We’re stopping in Florida first for the $1,000,000 Florida Derby (Gr. 1).

This is a big day for Gulfstream Park. It’s the biggest day on the calendar, with the $1,000,000 race the most notable in Florida every year. The winner gets an auto-invite to the Kentucky Derby, while 40 points for seconds is a big score as well.

There is a total of $2,398,000 in prize money available to be won at Gulfstream Park this afternoon. Head below for our best bets for Gulfstream Park and Florida Derby pick on April 2, 2022.

Race 6 – Ghostzapper Stakes

(1) Commandeer
+800 (8/1)
(2) Laughing Boy
+800 (8/1)
(3) Carlos L.
+2000 (20/1)
(4) Fearless
-125 (4/5)
(5) Capocostello
+1000 (10/1)
(6) Greatest Honour
+300 (3/1)
(7) Twelve Volt Man
+1200 (12/1)

Post Time: 1:57 p.m. EST
Distance: 1 ⅛ Miles

The $100,000 Ghostzapper Stakes (Gr. 3) covers 1 ⅛ miles on the dirt. Race 6 should be a good one between Greatest Honour and Fearless.

Greatest Honour is 3 for 8 and coming off four straight graded appearances. If Greatest Honour can find his form from the $200,000 Holy Bull Stakes (Gr. 3) and $300,000 Fountain of Youth Stakes (Gr. 2) from last year then Greatest Honour won’t have a problem.

In his most recent win, Greatest Honour won the Fountain of Youth by 1 ½ lengths on February 27. Since then, he showed 3rd in the 2021 Florida Derby (Gr. 1) and 6th most recently in the $100,000 Michelob Ultra Challenger Stakes (Gr. 3).

That was a disappointing showing, but we know that Greatest Honour is capable of better. Fearless should be tough based on his recent form.

Fearless is 5 for 13 and has finished in the top-2 in six of his last seven attempts. He most recently placed 2nd behind Speaker’s Corner by 5 ½ lengths in the $200,000 Gulfstream Park Mile Stakes (Gr. 2).

This came after Fearless placed 2nd in the $150,000 Fred W. Hooper Stakes on January 29. His persistence and consistency should be rewarded on Saturday.

(2) Catiche
+600 (6/1)

+3000 (30/1)
(7) Kathleen O.
-125 (4/5)

Post Time: 5:17 p.m. EST
Distance:1 1/16 Miles

The $250,000 Gulfstream Park Oaks (Gr. 2) covers 1 1/16 miles on the dirt. Goddess of Fire and Kathleen O. are likely ready for big runs on Saturday.

Goddess of Fire is a capable runner, finishing 1st, 3rd, 5th, 2nd, 2nd in five attempts. After his most recent outing for Todd Pletcher, Goddess of Fire should be involved this afternoon.

Goddess of Fire placed 2nd behind Turnerloose by a half-length on February 19. That was a nice effort in the $300,000 Rachel Alexandra Stakes (Gr. 2).

She hasn’t won since her debut on August 22 at Saratoga, though. Goddess of Fire is still looking for a stake win on her resume.

Kathleen O. is a perfect three-time winner in her career. She is 1st, 1st, 1st after winning the $200,000 Davona Dale Stakes (Gr. 2) on March 5.

In that promising attempt, Kathleen O. drove clear for a 2 length win in a Grade 2 assignment. This was after a 8 ½ length blowout in the $100,000 Cash Run Stakes on New Year’s Day.

In the second-biggest race at Gulfstream this afternoon, expect Kathleen O. to be tough to beat in the Gulfstream Park Oaks.

Race 13 – Kitten’s Joy Appleton Stakes

(1) Noble Indy
+1200 (12/1)
(2) Scarlett Sky
+600 (6/1)
(3) Wolfies Dynaghost

(6) Safe Conduct
+1500 (15/1)
(7) Phantom Currency
+300 (3/1)
(8) Carpenters Call
+1000 (10/1)
(9) English Bee
+350 (7/2)

Post Time: 5:55 p.m. EST
Distance: 1 Mile

Race 13 is the pre-main show at Gulfstream Park on Saturday. This event covers a mile for a $100,000 purse right before the Florida Derby. I’m looking at English Bee and Phantom Currency to have good prospects in the Kitten’s Joy Appleton.

They may have gotten a bad draw on the outside, but still look like the best. English Bee is 6 for 25 and should have a chance after running well in graded company recently.

Phantom Currency has to be in the mix after winning three of his previous four entries. He is looking for a hat-trick after a win in the $200,000 Mac Diarmida Stakes (Gr. 2) by ¾ lengths on February 27.

This isn’t the strongest that we’ve seen before. English Bee is coming off showing 3rd in the $150,000 Canadian Turf Stakes (Gr. 3) on March 5. He requires more against Phantom Currency.

I’d give Phanton Currency the call in a pretty good value pick in Race 13.

Post Time: 6:38 p.m. EST
Distance:5 ½ Furlongs

The $1,000,000 Florida Derby (Gr. 1) is a big one at Gulfstream Park on Saturday afternoon. There are two on my shortlist, with Charge It and Classic Causeway likely contenders.

Charge It has finished 2nd, 1st in two career starts. As a rookie, Charge It placed 2nd behind Volcanic by a neck for a $60,000 prize on January 8.

He came back with a better effort on February 12. Charge It defeated Enough Already by 8 ½ lengths in the same grade.

It was an impressive win with Charge it drawing clear at the ¼ pole and driving. If that effort comes to the track Saturday, he can’t be discarded.

Classic Causeway has proven himself recently and in top form. The colt is 3 for 5 and 1st, 3rd, 2nd, 1st, 1st.

In his last race, Classic Causeway came through with a 2 ½ length win in the $400,000 South Tampa Bay Derby (Gr. 2) on March 12.

That was a great run from Classic Causeway after a $250,000 Sam F. Davis Stakes (Gr. 3) 3 ¾ length win. It’s hard to ignore his form right now.

His workouts have also been impressive, with times of 59.95 seconds at 5 furlongs and 47.45 seconds most recently at 4 furlongs on March 26.

Classic Causeway is a live contender to win the Florida Derby.
