Fonner Park Selections for May 4, 2020 – Horse Racing Picks

Fonner Park will take another bow and enjoy another day in the spotlight on Monday. It’s not going to last forever, but Fonner Park has to like the attention. Other than Will Rogers Downs, Fonner Park is the only gambling spot in the US during the pandemic. Hopefully sooner rather than later that will change, but for now a little track in Grand Island, Nebraska is one of the biggest draws in sports betting on a Monday and Tuesday. That’s something no one expected to ever hear, but here we are.

That’s not to say that Fonner Park wants to continue to be the only game in town. If attendance is restricted then sure. However, the track is still taking a hit despite the increased handle. It’s tough to produce race cards on that alone, and while Fonner Park has been making it work, they would love to have fans back at the track spending money. That’s where they make the brunt of their revenue. Record-breaking betting off-the-track has been absolutely necessary to continue running their meet.

The weekend was a money maker for us, as Charlatan, Nadal, and the AI version of Secretariat all came through. The marquee races have been a huge positive, and hopefully that will continue on the Road to the Kentucky Derby. The Kentucky Derby is going to be one of the most exciting that I can remember in a while. There are several ponies that should be in good form in September. Tiz the Law is the greatest threat to Bob Baffert and his quest for another Derby and potential Triple Crown winner. For now, though, we have to get through the next few months. Today is Fonner Park Day in Nebraska. Head below for our free Fonner Park selections for May 4, 2020.

Post Time: 4:27 p.m. CST
Distance: 4 Furlongs

At only 4 furlongs, Race 3 is going to be a mad dash out of the starting gate. Seven horses are scheduled to run in the event in the later afternoon. A purse of $4,400 is offered for this race, so yeah, you can tell the difference between Fonner Park versus some of the bigger tracks. There isn’t much comparison when it comes to the purse sizes. There aren’t any huge underdogs in this race, with Frigidish the only +1000 underdog on the morning-line. I’d argue that Temple City Darlin and Pearl ofthe Harbor should be bigger underdogs that what we’re getting here.

Frigidish was on a monster roll, having won three straight races last summer. She also won 5 out of 6 races and placed in all 6. The only destination for Frigidish was a jump in class. It’s always a gamble when that happens and it didn’t pay off. Frigidish has been severely outclassed, going 5th, 10th, 10th in her previous three outings. Temple City Darlin was cold throughout last summer and it has continued.

She has gone 6th, 4th, 6th, 5th, 4th in her last five outings. Back-to-back wins at Prairie Meadows on May 4 and May 12 didn’t result in any momentum thereafter. Pearl ofthe Harbor has the best chance of winning out of the three, though is coming off a long layoff after finishing 5th on September 8, 2019. Terrific form from Pearl ofthe Harbor in a couple of wins on July 22, 2019 and August 25, 2019, but tailed off and hasn’t been seen on the track in a long while.

Jafmil’s Inferno and Taylor’s Beauty are pretty much even in this event. If you have to choose, I’d take the better price on Jafmil’s Inferno. Jafmil’s Inferno is coming off a win on April 13 by 3 ½ lengths over Feels Right. That was her first win in five races, having failed to show in four straight performances. Taylor’s Beauty has a win in 6 out of 33 races and is fresh off a win as well. She won by a head over Aunt Gayle on March 30 and has shown in three straight outings.

Holiday Clover has been picking apart the competition nicely in recent starts. She was unable to record four straight wins, but came close. Holiday Clover has won 2 of her last 4 entries and placed in all of them. In her most recent race, Holiday Clover was 1st by 4 lengths over Taylor’s Beauty on March 13. It was a dominant performance that went wire-to-wire for Holiday Clover. She has also placed in 5 out of her previous 6 races. Barring an off day at the office, look for Holiday Clover to be in the best form.

+600 (6/1)
(5) Trevor’s Forever
+600 (6/1)
(6) Pr Somethin Better
+450 (9/2)
(7) Silver Sailor
+1200 (12/1)
(8) Wacca Wacca Wacca
+350 (7/2)

Post Time: 5:48 p.m. CST
Distance:6 Furlongs

Another small purse of $4,700 at Fonner Park on Monday, but that’s to be expected in Grand Island. Eight horses are signed up for the event, which will conclude after 6 furlongs on the dirt. Jessica Glitters and Silver Sailor will likely fight for who has the longest odds in this race at post time.

Jessica Glitters has a slight advantage on Silver Sailor according to the morning lines, but I’m not so sure. Jessica Glitters has a win in 2 of 28 races and has finished 10th, 5th, 8th, 7th, 7th in her last five outings. July 3, 2019, 18 races ago, is the last time that Jessica Glitters found a win.

Alexandrias Throne has a win in 2 of 11 races. She gets the insider rail out of the gate here and is probably a better bet than Jessica Glitters and SIlver Sailor if you’re looking for an upset bet. However, she’s struggled to get into the top-3, having finished outside of 3rd in seven straight outings.

Trevor’s Forever is however coming off a win on April 20 by 1 ¼ lengths. That was a solid run after failing in 14 straight outings. And in ten straight performances, Trevor’s Forever didn’t show in any race. I would like to see a bit more consistency. A J Hart doesn’t have a recent win, but has shown in 7 out of her previous 10 races. She is a winner in 2 out of 15 career races.

Terri’s Temper and Wacca Wacca Wacca will both likely meet each other on the track in the later stages of this event. Wacca Wacca Wacca had a couple of solid performances recently, finishing 3rd on April 21 and 1st on April 13. In the win, Wacca Wacca Wacca finished 1 ¾ lengths ahead of Shiverhertimber.

It was the 2nd win in 10 outings. Terri’s Temper has gone 6th, 7th, 5th, 2nd in her previous four races. She’s shown in 2 of her last 7 races, with her last win December 18, 2019, eight races ago. Fully capable of showing up in good form to win on Monday in Race 5, but I think there’s better value to be had elsewhere. Wacca Wacca Wacca has the potential to run with Terri’s Temper and win.
