Another day of racing at Gulfstream Park on Sunday. This time on Mother’s Day with a racecard consisting of ten races. It isn’t the biggest card at Gulfstream Park. Yesterday featured a stakes race, though that was the only one taking place this weekend. With Churchill Downs nearing their opening day, you’re going to see plenty of stakes races soon. Of course, Churchill Downs won’t really be opening to the public. The gate will be closed and racing will go on without spectators like the other tracks.
Their handle should be through the roof at Churchill Downs. The brand name alone should attract people to bet on the races in Kentucky. That’s going to take a chunk away from others, but horse racing as a whole has seen a monster bump in bets. That doesn’t necessarily equate to more money for the track, as they only take a small percentage of the handle online.
However, it keeps horsemen working and able to provide enough for purse money. We’ll give the Gulfstream Park Pick 5 and Rainbow Pick 6 another try on Sunday. You can get in on the bet for a minimum of just a buck at BetOnline. It can only take a dollar for a big payday if you hit the Pick 6. Head below for our free Gulfstream Park Pick 5 and Rainbow Pick 6 selections below. Note that the Pick 6 is Race 5-10, and the Pick 5 is Race 6-10. Distance: 1 Mile
Race 5 will feature a mile gallop for a $17,000 purse. It should be a close race between Fiamma Mamma, I’m That Bird, and La Tres Jolie. For an upset, Union Lane looks like the best option from the No. 1 post. She is coming off a win on April 11 by a neck over Witch Hunter. That was her first win after struggling in her career.
Fiamma Mamma will be on the opposite side of the starting gate as the favorite in Race 5. Fiamma Mamma isn’t coming off a win, but was solid enough for 2nd on April 25 in a more difficult race. She broke well out of the gate and held onto the lead until losing it in the stretch by 1 ¾ lengths.
Right next to Fiamma Mamma, I’m That Bird, not Mind That Bird who won the Kentucky Derby in a monster upset years back, has a win in 5 career races. She won on September 14, 2019 by 2 ½ lengths. Great kick at the top of the stretch by I’m That Bird to overtake two other horses to get the win comfortably. She has finished in the top-3 in 3 of 5 races, including her most recent outing on April 1. I’m That Bird was good for 3rd to beat six other participants.
La Tres Jolie has a win in 9 races, with some discouraging results recently. Her win came on October 23, 2019. She placed right after that event, but hasn’t been able to place again in six straight races. La Tres Jolie has finished 6th in back-to-back starts on March 18 and April 3. Given the odds, the best value appears to be on the No. 8 horse, I’m That Bird.

Race 6 is shaping up to be a close race as well at Gulfstream Park. Sweden and Carolyn’s Smile might get into a duel as the strongest horses in this field. Sweden is looking for her first win after six unsuccessful trips to the starting gate. She’s finished 2nd, 3rd, 6th in her previous three outings.
Sweden was a head length away from winning on January 24, but was ousted by Heiressindy in a close battle. Since that performance, Sweden has regressed in two of her latest events. Sweden was 3rd on March 4 and then 6th in her most recent performance on April 2. In that race, Sweden faded hard and had no break throughout the race.
Carolyn’s Smile has appeared in five races, finishing in the top-3 in 3 of 5 events. Good form in her latest outing on April 10, but was barely edged out by Bird Map at the wire by a neck length. Carolyn’s Smile would have had a wire-to-wire win if she was able to hold on there. She broke well out of the gate, but unable to protect the lead in the stretch. I’ll back Carolyn’s Smile at the better price over Sweden.

Race 7 is a short sprint of 5 furlongs with 14 horses scheduled to participate in the event. 14 horses will be looking to take the top prize out of a handsome $42,000 purse. Trev and Good Bye Greg are in the best form going into Race 7, with Island Tap worth a look as an upset selection. Island Tap is coming off a win and is a winner in 2 of 12 races.
His most recent win was on March 31 by 1 ¾ lengths over What’s to Blame in a wire-to-wire victory out of the gate. He held the lead in a race prior to that win, but couldn’t hold on and slipped to 3rd. Island Tap was leading by 1 ½ lengths before running out of steam.
Good Bye Greg has had a lot of success after placing in three straight races and a win in three straight prior to that stretch. Good Bye Greg has finished in the top-2 in eight races, though is coming off a layoff after a race on October 6, 2019. Good Bye Greg has won 13 of 23 races in his career for an impressive career. He is still, however, looking for his first stakes win. If he returns in the same form as 2019, then Good Bye Greg is going to be a major threat to win.
Trev has been steamrolling the competition in his latest races and is coming off a bit of a layoff, though not as far back as October. His last entry was on December 14, 2019 and he continued to stomp on the competition. Trev won by 6 ¾ lengths in an easy win over Saucy Don in a wire-to-wire blowout. Broke well out of the gate and didn’t have any competition. He had a few months off before that race and remained in the same form as in August, where Trev won easily again by 5 ½ lengths.
He enters Sunday with four straight wins and is a winner in 6 of his previous 8 outings. He’s finished in the top-3 in 8 straight outings, and has been able to find a ton of success late in his career. Foaled in 2010, Trev is a winner in 14 of 40 races, with all of his success coming after some tweaks were made in training. Good Bye Greg and Trev should duel, with Trev strong enough to pull away in the stretch.

Race 10 features a $32,000 purse with the top prize going to the best horse at 7 furlongs. Fortune Cookie and Yodel E. A. Who are likely going to have good runs in this event if they want to press on Sunday. There is slight value on Noon Time Gem at +1000, but is going to have to catch some breaks. Noon Time Gem has been inconsistent and could wake up today and decide to go all out.
He is a winner in 3 of 18 races in his career and has gone 1st, 7th, 2nd, 5th in his previous four outings, all of which came in 2020. In his win on January 30, Noon Time Gem beat out Early Entry by a neck. However, didn’t look to be in the same form in his latest race on April 18. Noon Time Gem was defeated to finish 5th after starting 2nd out of the gate. What horse is going to show up today? Hard to say, but he will have to go all out for the win.
Fortune Cookie has been a bit inconsistent as well, having gone 1st, 5th, 3rd, 5th in his previous four outings. His last trip to the starting gate for a race was on March 21 and had a similar race as Noon Time Gem. Broke well out of the gate and then slowly faded back. Yodel E. A. didn’t look sharp in his last race on April 17. That was against much better competition, though, and drops back to a class he will be better in. Prior to that race, Yodel E. A. finished in the top-3 in 7 of his last 8 races and won three straight events. He’s a winner in 5 of 17 career races. This is an event that should allow him to go back to the winner’s circle.
Post Time: 5:17 p.m. EST
A small field of six will take to the starting gate for 6 furlongs. This is the feature race of the day with a purse worth $44,000 on the line. Frosted Grace and Where Paradise Lay are going to be a couple of horses to shortlist in Race 9. Fuel the Bern might be able to make this one interesting as well. Fuel the Bern will need to get back to mid-2019 form or catch a break for a win.
He has finished 5th, 2nd, 2nd, 4th, 5th, 7th since his most recent victory on February 9. From late 2018 to mid-2019, Fuel the Bern was rolling with 3 wins in 4 races. However, his form has been off since that stretch. He might be able to jump in and make things interesting in the stretch, but something better than +350 would be nice.
Where Paradise Lay is coming off a win on April 18 after going winless in four races. He beat Hard Belle by a neck to earn the 3rd win in 12 races of his career. Leading up to that event, Where Paradise Lay finished 6th in back-to-back outings. Frosted Grace is going to be his biggest competition in Race 9. If Frosted Grace showed up to race today, then he will be tough to beat. There’s several inconsistent participants in this event, but Frosted Grace is not.
Frosted Grace has finished in the top-3 in six straight races, including a win on September 25, 2019. He nabbed the win by 2 ¾ lengths over Zorb. In his most recent race, Frosted ran well but couldn’t edge out Soldado. Soldado got Frosted Grace by a head in a duel in the stretch. Frosted Grace had a length lead on Soldado and could have easily won. A similar performance on Sunday likely gets him a win.
Post Time: 5:47 p.m. EST
6 furlongs will close the card at Gulfstream Park on Sunday. 12 horses are signed up to race in the final race of the day. This is a wide open race that is going to be competitive. South Sea, Front Loaded, Quijote, and Atthepearlygates can all go on the shortlist. South Sea enters as the betting favorite, but he isn’t a convincing favorite by any means. He’s a winner in 6 of 30 races and hasn’t won since last summer.
In any event, placed and showed in each of his last two outings. In his most recent run, South Sea finished 3rd behind Hard Belle and Where Paradise Lay. He was steady, but didn’t have the extra drive needed in the stretch. He’s finished 7th, 6th, 2nd, 3rd in his previous four races.
Front Loaded has 6 wins in 30 races just like South Sea. His results have been a bit scattered all over the place. Inconsistent efforts have plagued his career, but if he’s in top form today, Front Loaded can certainly get the win. He’s gone 7th, 4th, 2nd, 4th in his last four starts. His last win was back on August 11, 2019 by 3 ½ lengths over Hard Belle. Quijote was in that race as well, having finished 4th.
Since early 2019, Quijote has not been in top form. He won on January 19, 2019 and then looked sharp in the Gulfstream Park Sprint Stakes (Gr. 3) to finish 2nd, but fell off after that. Quijote has finished 6th, 4th, 4th, 5th in his previous four starts. He needs to get back on track today against what is an average field.
Atthepearlygates heads into Sunday in good form after a win on March 18. He beat Big Spender by 9 ½ lengths in a blowout. Finished 2nd in back-to-back starts on January 30 and February 21 leading up to his 2nd win in 15 career outings. Bigger ask of him on Sunday against this field, but it’s not the strongest event he could have entered. At +800, I think he’s worth taking a gamble on.
