Gulfstream Park Selections for February 17, 2021 – Horse Racing Picks

Wednesday is a decently sized card in the US, as eight racecourses are open for wagering at BetOnline. The standardbred tracks are also running on Wednesday. BetOnline also has a menu of overseas tracks from as far as Hong Kong and South Africa throughout the week. Everyone will be paying attention to Saudi Arabia on Saturday at King Abdulaziz Equestrian Field in Riyadh for the $20,000,000 Saudi Cup.

There are also six other races worth at least a million, including turf races. I know that racing on the grass doesn’t sound like a big deal, but Saudi Arabia, a country that never races on turf tracks, it is a rare occasion. They installed the turf for the first ever Saudi Cup meet last year, and there is the $1,000,000 Turf Sprint, $1,000,000 Neom Turf Cup, and $2,500,000 Red Sea Turf Handicap.

There isn’t a stakes race on Wednesday, though Gulfstream Park is back to racing today. Gulfstream Park has ten races on the schedule tonight. A total of $293,000 in prize money is available for wagering. Head below for our free Gulfstream Park picks for February 17, 2021.

Distance:1 Mile
Purse:$50,000

Race 3 is a mile on the dirt for a $50,000 purse at Gulfstream on Wednesday afternoon. Eight runners are signed up to participate in the turf event, which includes a couple of horses that likely put together bold bids. Dream Keeper and Shaftesbury should run up well in the stretch here.

Dream Keeper has finished 6th, 3rd, 2nd in his career and showing improvement with each passing race. In his most recent performance, Dream Keeper placed 2nd behind Martini Blu by 5 ¼ lengths in a $22,000 event on December 27.

Prior to that outing, Dream Keeper showed 3rd for a $22,000 race. This is going to be a tougher assignment on Wednesday, but Dream Keeper is open to improvement and could prove to be the best in Race 3. Shaftesbury will likely give Dream Keeper a big challenge.

Shaftesbury has finished 5th and 2nd in two-career races. In his most recent, Shaftesbury placed 2nd behind Annex by a length in a $50,000 assignment. It was nice improvement after finishing 5th as a first-time runner on December 20 in a $50,000 race.

Shaftesbury is a $625,000 horse expected to be a stakes runner in his career. His work in the morning has been good, with times of 49.03 and 49.51 seconds in January and February. Shaftesbury should cash in if he wants to run today.

Post Time: 4:12 p.m. EST
Distance:5 Furlongs
Purse:$31,000

Race 7 is a $31,000 race on the turf covering 5 furlongs. Keep in mind that BetOnline lists every race on the main track at Gulfstream Park in error. That is incorrect, though with scattered rain, a sloppy track could push things to the dirt. If things stay on the grass, then Fully Loaded and Tropicat should be held in high regard. Fully Loaded has been a consistent runner for the last year.

Since February of 2020, Fully Loaded has finished in the top-3 in 8 out of 9 entries, including three wins. However, Fully Loaded has gone winless in four straight after winning on September 19 in a $48,000 event. He placed 2nd behind Tropicat most recently on January 14 in a $31,000 event. That was a strong run from Tropicat, who is 7 for 27 in his career with wins in two of his previous three outings.

Tropicat won three races ago in July over Kyle for a $47,000 win, and then came back to show 3rd on September 19 in a $48,000 assignment. Tropicat was in terrific form most recently in the win against Fully Loaded by a length a month ago. Similar form should be enough on Wednesday. Pass on Race 7 if this race gets transferred to the dirt.

Our Bet
(7) TROPICAT

Race 8

(1) Beast of Wildwood
+600 (6/1)
(2) Bahamian Girl
+1200 (12/1)
(3) Subsidiary
+300 (3/1)
(4) Sassy Justice
+400 (4/1)
(5) Gran Etiqueta
+2000 (20/1)
(6) Socially Astray
+1500 (15/1)
(7) Dont Get Smart
+450 (9/2)
(8) Brookes All Mine
+250 (5/2)

Post Time: 4:44 p.m. EST
Distance:7 Furlongs
Purse:$19,000

Race 8 is scheduled for the dirt covering 7 furlongs. Sassy Justice and Brookes All Mine are held in high esteem on my shortlist in this race. Sassy Justice is 3 for 19 in her career with some decent results recently. She has been in the top-3 in three of her previous four showings. However, Sassy Justice hasn’t been to the winner’s circle since a win on February 9, 2020.

Sassy Justice is winless in 12 straight races. Nevertheless, she gave a good account in her most recent outing, and could get a win with a similar performance. Sassy Justice defeated Grace’s Drama by 2 lengths in a $19,00 event, but was well back of the winner by 8 ¼ lengths. Brookes All Mine is a veteran that is going into her 54th race on Wednesday.

She is 10 for 53 going into this afternoon, with two wins in her previous three performances. Brookes All Mine beat Assume Control by 10 lengths in a $17,000 event, and then came back strong most recently to beat Valley Date by 1 ¾ lengths in a $19,000 race. This runner has finished in the top-2 in 8 of his previous 10, and should run another close one. I would suggest considering the No. 8 horse to strike.
