The 136th running of the Kentucky Derby from Churchill Down in Louisville Kentucky is just hours away, and it is crunch time to place your wagers on who will win this year’s version of the race for the roses. One thing that can certainly be taken into consideration for today’s race is the condition of the track itself. Right now, the weather for Louisville Kentucky states a 90% chance of rain, with a strong possibility of thunder storms within the area. These types of conditions can really hinder a horses speed, and especially control on a dirt track such as Churchill Downs. It may not be the fastest horse who wins this race, but the one who can grind out the sloppy conditions in order to be crowned the 136th Kentucky Derby Champion of all-time.

Below we have predictions on who we believe can take home the 2010 Kentucky Derby. One of our predictions will be a favorite, one will be a middle-of-the-pack horse, and finally we will predict a longshot who will be worth a look in today’s race.
Favorite To Win – Lookin at Lucky (+550) – Even though Lookin At Lucky is a horse who is better when he is allowed to run in his own rhythm (which may prove difficult in today’s track conditions), he is still the odds on favorite to win the 2010 Kentucky Derby. Lookin At Lucky was the best 2-year old horse in the United States last year, taking home the Eclipse Award after winning 5 of his first 6 races. To date, Lookin At Lucky has won 6 of 8 career races, and has never finished worse than 3rd. All eyes will be on Lookin At Lucky to win this year’s Derby, but it may be more wide open this year than people think.
Middle of the Pack – Dublin (+1800) – Dublin is a horse that is making the steady progress that has resembled past Kentucky Derby winners. If you don’t believe me, ask his 4-time Kentucky Derby Champion Trainer D. Wayen Lukas, who likes what he sees from his colt this Spring. The sloppy conditions at Churchill could actually be an advantage for Dublin, as he is more of a grinding horse rather than pure speed and power. He is proven he can battle through traffic to win, and I can see him grinding out a victory today from the wet and muddy conditions in Louisville.
Longshot – Jackson Bend (+2500) – My longshot to win the 2010 Kentucky Derby is Jackson Bend, who was the best 2-year old horse in Florida last year. He was turned over to two-time Kentucky winning Trainer Nick Zito after a 100 Beyer performance in the $400K In Reality at Calder last October. The colt has finished first or second in all of his 9 career starts so far, and gives it his all every time he hits the track, which I believe will be on display in Louisville.
