Distance:5 ½ Furlongs
We’re off and running at Laurel Park on Saturday with this $18,000 event covering 5 ½ furlongs on the dirt. Manklin Creek and You Are Awesome should have a good race on Saturday. Manklin Creek is winless in six-career races, but was able to show something in his most recent showing. He showed 3rd for the first time in his career. Manklin Creek finished 4th, 5th, 5th, 7th, 7th and then got into the money to show 3rd on December 12.
Manklin Creek showed 3rd in that $24,266 race, and dropped in class for a Saturday assignment. This should be an easier race for Manklin Creek, so expect something better from Manklin Creek. You Are Awesome should provide some resistance, who is winless in eight races as well. He has finished 2nd, 5th, 5th, 3rd in his previous four outings.
You Are Awesome showed 3rd in his latest race as well. He finished 3rd in a $30,448 event. This was much tougher than the race Manklin Creek showed 3rd in. In fact, Manklin Creek ran in that event, and finished 7th in that race. He didn’t keep up with You Are Awesome at all. I will lay it on You Are Awesome to get the win.

We turn to Race 5 next, which is a 7-furlong event for a $25,000 purse. Baptize the Boy and Nomo Ron are going to be tough runners in this race. Baptize the Boy is 4 for 22 in his career and is in the best form of his career recently. He’s finished in the top-3 in seven of his previous eight outings, with the streak coming to an end on November 12. Baptize the Boy looked good in the $102,000 Maryland Million Sprint Handicap (Black Type) to place 2nd behind Karen’s Notion by 1 length. Great effort by a horse that wasn’t expected to place there.
Nomo Ron is 7 for 28 in his career, with four straight finishes in the top-2. That includes two wins on October 15 and November 19. Nomo Ron beat Girls Love Me by 1 ½ lengths in a $23,325 event in October, and then followed up with another win a month later over Stroll Smokin by 1 length in a $50,985 event. Nomo Ron came back on December 11 in a $48,150 race and placed 2nd behind Fortunate Friends by a half length. He’s going down in class today, and should be able to produce in a $25,000 race. There’s no question that Nomo Ron can’t win in Race 5.

Distance:5 ½ Furlongs
Race 8 is the feature race at Laurel Park on Saturday, with a purse of $45,000 covering 5 ½ furlongs. Karan’s Notion and Stroll Smokin are going to be hot contenders to get the win in this event. Stroll Smokin is 8 for 28 in his career and feeling good of late. He has been in fine form with top-3 performances in four of his previous five outings. Stroll Smokin was a 1 ¾ length winner over Hole Me Black on August 20, and has finished 6th, 2nd, 2nd since then. In his most recent showing, Stroll Smoking placed 2nd behind Nomo Rono by 1 length in a $50,985 assignment.
Karan’s Notion is 4 for 9 in his career and in the top-3 in five straight events. He has finished in the top-2 in four of those five outings, and is a winner in three races. Karan’s Notion seeks a hat-trick today after winning on October 24 in the $102,000 Maryland Million Sprint Handicap and a recent $59,868 allowance race by 1 ¾ lengths. WIth Karan’s Notion sliding down to an easier challenge on Saturday, a hat-trick does not seem out of the question today.
