Who doesn’t like racing under the lights? It’s even better when it is a Sunday and your attention is drawn to the NFL during the afternoon. There is the Sunday Night Football game and some horse racing to get to on Sunday. With the return of college basketball, there is also a healthy dose of hardwood action to get to today.
March felt empty without the NCAA tournament this past year, so fortunately we have that to look forward to in 2021. Our night racing card came through last night with a winning effort. We found two winning horses at Remington Park to make it a two for three night in OKC. It would have been nice to get the sweep, but we’ll take the profit and move on to the next day.
Mountaineer Park headlines the night racing on Sunday evening. Between Mountaineer and Charles Town, West Virginia has a stranglehold on events under the lights in the east. For tonight’s action, Mountaineer Park has a card worth $91,100 across nine races on the dirt. It’s supposed to be a clear night with no precipitation in the area. We also have a couple of picks over at Churchill Downs for the afternoon card in Louisville. Head below for our free Mountaineer Park picks for November 29, 2020.

Distance:1 Mile 70 Yards
A mile and 70 yards is what it will take to decide Race 2 at Mountaineer Park on Sunday night. Nine horses are expected to participate in the event. Stiva and Sure She’s Grand are expected to run strong races on Sunday. Stiva is 4 for 14 in his career and has been in good form of late. She has gone 1st, 1st, 9th, 1st, 3rd, 5th since the summer in June. In her most recent win, Stiva beat Firth by a neck for a $8,000 purse on August 13.
That was a nice effort, but Stiva was unable to follow up since. Stiva showed 3rd on August 28 to lose to Annika Gold by 5 lengths for a $25,000 purse. She was regarded as fading in the stretch. In her last outing, Stiva finished 5th in a $20,000 assignment on September 28. That race was too tough for Stiva, but she is down in class on Sunday and should find this race much easier. Stiva was clocked at 51 seconds in a 4-furlong workout on November 11.
Sure She’s Grand has been unstoppable in keeping out of the money since February. She has been in the top-3 in seven straight performances, which includes three wins during that stretch. In her most recent performance, Sure She’s Grand beat Thirsty Gal by 15 ¾ lengths in an absolute blowout for a $7,500 purse in her debut at Mountaineer Park. Overall in her career, she has won 9 of 34 assignments. Following that easy win, she inches up in class to the $10,000 level on Sunday. If she runs like that again, then the class jump won’t matter. Look for Sure She’s Grand to prevail in the stretch.

Race 7 is the feature event of the night at Mountaineer Park for a $17,800 purse. Unbridledselection and J J Wedgit Man look like horses to pay attention to in this event. Unbridledselection is 1 for 13 in his career, which doesn’t sound like much, but has been close throughout his career. He has finished in the top-3 in eight of his last nine runs.
Unbridledselection won on October 10 over Ultra Diva by a nose for a $15,500 purse. He went all out in the stretch and needed all of it to get the win in that event. Prior to that win, Unbridledselection placed 2nd behind Sky Energy by 5 lengths for a $17,800 purse. Unbridledselection is back in that class for today at Mountaineer Park on Sunday. He will be tested by J J Wedgit Man from the outside. J J Wedgit Man is going to be dangerous after moving down in class.
J J Wedgit Man is 1 for 11 in his career. He won in July over All About Tap for a $27,000 purse. River Crossroad Rvf bolted off the track in that race and went to the backside at the 3/16 pole, so it might have been a different result if River Crossroad Rvf stayed on the track and wanted to finish the race. In any case, this assignment is much simpler than J J Wedgit Man has seen in the past. He’s gone 2nd, 2nd, 3rd, 6th in his previous four outings.
In his last appearance, he finished 6th in the $70,000 West Virginia Lottery Breeders’ Classic Stakes (Black Type). Prior to that, J J Wedgit Man was 3rd in a $25,000 race on October 1. Events below the $20,000 threshold haven’t been common for him. He should find this event on the easier side Sunday.

Distance:5 ½ Furlongs
One more selection at Mountaineer Park on Sunday night. This is for a $13,200 purse on the dirt over 5 ½ furlongs of racing. Eight horses are expected to participate, with Such Great Heights and Aussie Gold my favorite horses in the event. Aussie Gold is 5 for 26 in her career and running for a hat-trick tonight. She won on August 8 over by ¾ lengths over Revenal in a $20,000 event.
Aussie Gold inched ahead and won as an underdog in that event. She was able to follow up for another impressive run on September 17 to win over Allison K by 1 ¼ lengths in a $18,000 event. Note that if Take Me Home didn’t get disqualified, she would have lost by 7 ½ lengths, though. Expert Aussie Gold to run close in this race. Such Great Heights is off to a nice start in her career. She is 5 for 9 and has won three of her previous four outings.
Such Great Heights is in the form of her career at the moment. She has her eyes on a hat-trick on Sunday night as well. In her first of two wins, Such Great Heights won on October 1 at Thistledown in Cleveland. In that performance, she defeated Kennedie Sky by a nose for a $11,000 purse. She followed up for a 4 ¼ lengths win over Midnight Karma in a $13,000 race on November 2. Aussie Gold will likely test down the stretch, but look for the $30,000 Such Great Heights to fend off pressure.
