There will be a full afternoon of racing at Parx on Wednesday afternoon in Philadelphia. There are ten races on the schedule with a total of $216,000 available between nine dirt races and one turf race. Parx generally hosts cards with over $200,000 in prize money, so this is a typical afternoon for them. Along with Saratoga, Parx is one of the more recognizable tracks open for racing on Wednesday.
We have you covered for Saratoga today as well. Saratoga will take the spotlight on Saturday with the running of the $1,000,000 (Gr. 1) Travers Stakes on Saturday. I will say if you like Tiz the Law in the Kentucky Derby, bet him before the Travers Stakes. If he wins, and he’s the favorite, you probably aren’t going to get the same price after Saturday.
Jockeys must report to Kentucky by August 24 or they risk being allowed to participate in the Kentucky Derby. That’s a lot of racing that riders will miss out on at their home track if they have to head to Churchill Downs earlier than they want. Churchill Downs does not have a meet right now, nor does Keeneland so the vast majority are going to be coming from out of state. Del Mar and Saratoga are the two most notable tracks running right now.
The Kentucky Derby is quickly approaching, but there’s hundreds of races to get to before then. We have a few selections at Parx on Wednesday afternoon. Head below for our free Parx Racing picks for August 5, 2020.
Post Time: 12:55 p.m. EST
Distance: 1 Mile
We will get started early in the afternoon at Parx with Race 1. This is an event that likely comes down to Revolutionary Mary and Hay Buck. There hasn’t been too much success for Hay Buck recently, but this should be an easier assignment for her. She is 3rd, 5th, 7th, 5th in her previous four races. Overall, she’s 2 for 20 with a win on October 10, 2019 her most recent victory. That was a winning race for Hay Buck by a half length over Yellow Chick in a $22,000 event.
After finishing last on February 17, and 5th on July 27 in a $19,000 event just over a week ago, Hay Buck is back out there at Parx on Wednesday afternoon. She will face tough competition from Revolutionary Mary who has been a regular to the winner’s circle. Revolutionary Mary is a three-time winner in six races. She has a 50% win percentage going into Wednesday. In her previous four races, Revolutionary Mary has recorded three wins for a nice stretch in four 2020 events.
Revolutionary Mary won on January 25 over Betty’s Got Rythm by a half length, and then followed up for another win on March 13 for a 3 ¾ lengths for a $14,400 purse. In his most recent entry on July 24, Revolutionary Mary won in an easy win by 5 ¾ lengths in a wire-to-wire victory for a $11,800 purse. This is a bit of a tougher event for Revolutionary Mary, but a win shouldn’t be out of the question. The form she presented just a couple of weeks ago would likely be sufficient for a win here.

We will turn to Race 5 for our next selection at Parx. A purse of $20,000 is on offer in this event. Mr Classical and Gray Gary should get into a tight race in this one. A duel in the stretch wouldn’t be much of a surprise between those two competitors. Mr Classical is the betting favorite on the morning-line with a price of 8/5.
He is 2 for 17 in his career with a couple of strong races recently. He’s finished 5th, 5th, 1st, 2nd in his previous four outings. His last two performances were sharp to win on June 29 by a neck at the $26,000 level. Mr Classical got into a duel on that day against Gemo Rain and ultimately had the edge at the wire.
Following that win, Mr Classical was on the opposite side, as he fell by a half length as the betting favorite in a $21,000 event. This is certainly a class that Mr Classical can run competitively in. A win in a $20,000 race for Mr Classical isn’t out of the question here. Contending with Gray Gary will likely be his biggest challenger in Race 5.
Gray Gary is 4 for 10 in his career and coming off a win on July 18 at Delaware Park. He beat Yondering by a head to win a duel in the stretch. Gray Gary has finished 1st, 1st, 5th, 5th, 1st in his previous five outings, all of which came in 2020. In his two wins in early 2020, Gray Gary won a $33,990 and $28,000 event in convincing fashion, so this class isn’t a problem for him. He made a couple of strong recent workouts with times of 1:00.60 at 5 furlongs and 48.40 seconds at 4 furlongs. Gary Gary is more than capable of knocking off the favorite in this race.

Race 7 is the feature race of the day at Parx in Philadelphia. A mile of racing for a $40,000 purse on the dirt is in the cards for this event. Mr Thrifty and Jerusalem Gates are likely to get involved with bold efforts in the stretch. Mr Thrifty gets the inside rail out of the gate, while Jerusalem Gates will be right next to Mr Thrifty from the No. 2 post position.
Mr Thrifty doesn’t have a win in his seven-race career. He’s finished in the top-3 on three occasions, but besides that there hasn’t been any success for him. Mr Thrifty went on a layoff two races ago after finishing 7th in a $45,000 event.
Mr Thrifty returned to the post on June 24 and garnered better results. He finished 3rd in a $40,000 race, which might have a good race to shake the rust off for today. Mr Thrifty held up well in two July workouts, with recorded times of 48.92 seconds at 4 furlongs and 37.01 seconds at 3 furlongs. Expect him to have a good run at the top prize in the feature race of the day at Parx.
It’s likely that Jerusalem Gates will give him some issues next to him. Jerusalem Gates will be making his third appearance as a runner on Wednesday. In his first two races, Jerusalem Gates was up front and near the front to place 2nd in both outings. He finished 3 ½ lengths behind Arkaan in his debut, and then came close again in another $40,000 event. Jerusalem Gates is after another $40,000 prize, only this time the top payout. Expect Jerusalem Gates to run close again, with a better chance of winning in this outing.
