Penn National Race Course Selections for August 12, 2020 – Horse Racing Picks

Penn National Race Course in Grantville is one of the biggest tracks with action on Wednesday in the country. Saratoga shines above the rest today, but Penn National has a big racecard with 11 races scheduled. Penn National as a company has been doing really well for themselves during the pandemic. Not many companies can say that their value shot through the roof, but Penn National has been sitting pretty recently. Their focus on online gambling has been holding up well.

Racing in Pennsylvania has to be doing fine with Presque Isle Downs and Penn National Race Course off the ground and running right now. Penn National always has a lot of races offered on their cards. The backstretch is packed with horses signing up for events here. That’s good for business in Grantville. Head below for our free Penn National Race Course picks for August 12, 2020.

Purse: $17,000

We’re up and running at Penn National Race Course with Race 2. Mary Elizabeth and Konstantinova are expected to run bold races and should be near the front in this one. Mary Elizabeth, who is coupled with Tonight Maybe, should be close from the No. 1 post position. Tonight Maybe currently has reserve status, so don’t expect to see them both running on Wednesday.

Mary Elizabeth has finished 7th, 5th, 4th in her career. In her most recent performance, Mary Elizabeth was 4th in a $18,100 race. She is down in class today after failing to get into the money in her previous three outings. That said, Mary Elizabeth didn’t look so hot at the $17,000 level on January 10 where she finished 5th as a sophomore runner.

In her defense, Mary Elizabeth has been showing steady improvement in the morning and continues to show better form. In her most recent workouts, Mary Elizabeth looked competitive at 4 furlongs, with times of 49.20 and 49.90 seconds. This isn’t the toughest field for Mary Elizabeth to compete with, so she should be close at least.

Konstantinova might be her biggest challenger in this race. She doesn’t have much to brag about with her win-loss record of 0-10, but is used to racing against much tougher horses than she’ll be presented with today. Konstantinova placed in her debut in 2018, but hasn’t been able to make much noise since.

She has finished 5th, DNF, 3rd in her previous three outings. Keep in mind that all of her races have been for $20,000+. This is by far her easiest assignment to date, and without strong competition to bother her, expect her to have a good chance of getting to the winner’s circle for the first time in her career.

Post Time: 7:44 p.m. EST
Distance:6 Furlongs
Purse:$11,800

Race 5 is our next stop at Penn National Race Course on Wednesday. This event is worth $11,800 for 6 furlongs of racing on the dirt. Calculated Thinkin and Seismic Jolt are going to be involved in the stretch. Seismic Jolt is 3 for 12 in his career and coming off a win on July 29. That ended a six-race losing streak for Seismic Jolt who won by a nose over Ring the Bella. That was for a $11,800 purse, so Seismic Jolt is staying in the same class after that performance. It was close and Seismic Jolt was a heavy favorite in that outing, so probably a bit closer than his backers were hoping for.

Calculated Thinkin is searching for a hat-trick today following wins on March 5 and July 10. He’s finished 2nd, 2nd, 2nd, 8th, 1st, 1st, in his previous six outings dating back to December 6. In his first of two wins, Calculated Thinkin disposed of the field by 1 ¼ lengths in a $10,800 race. He came back on July 10 and for a 4 ¾ length win in an even better form. If Calculated Thinkin maintains that form, then a win is going to be within his range on Wednesday night at Penn National Race Course.

(7) Sacred Sho Grl

(8) Chimera
+1000 (10/1)

Post Time: 9:02 p.m. EST
Distance:6 Furlongs
Purse: $31,600

One of two feature races today at Penn National Race Course, Race 8 offers a $31,600 purse for 6 furlongs on the dirt. Sacred Sho Grl and Clara Creek should be involved in the battle in the stretch on Wednesday night. Clara Creek is a rookie and making her debut on Wednesday. She was an inexpensive purchase at auction in 2017 for $2,700.

Clara Creek was bred by Joe-Dan Farm Inc. She should figure to have an adequate career. At least better than her price tag indicates. Clara Creek has appeared to be relatively strong in morning workouts and could make some noise right out of the gate in her first showing.

Clara Creek completed 4 furlongs in 49.10 and 48 seconds, while going for 5 furlongs at 1:03.40, 1:02.20, and 1:03.50. It’s disappointing for her to see her time creeping up there in early August, but she should have enough in the tank to handle 6 furlongs on Wednesday evening. Sacred Sho Grl has some experience with three races going into Race 8.

She will be making her fourth start looking for a win. Sacred Sho Grl has finished 3rd, 2nd, 5th in her first three entries. In her best effort, Sacred Sho Grl finished 5 ¼ lengths behind Secret Music to place 2nd on July 8. She followed up a little over two weeks later to finish 5th, which was a disappointing result, though Sacred Sho Grl is in easier company tonight. A win in Race 8 for Sacred Sho Grl wouldn’t be surprising.
