We have a full card of racing on Friday to usher in the new weekend. It’s a nice day with Belmont Park, Churchill Downs, and Santa Anita Park all operating and offering cards. The biggest day is at Santa Anita with four stakes races.
Santa Anita has four stakes races, which are three Breeders’ Cup Challenge Races and three graded events. To celebrate the opening of the fall meet, the $300,000 American Pharoah Stakes (Gr. 1) is scheduled for Friday afternoon.
Our first look on Friday is in Arcadia at Santa Anita. There are a total of nine races with $1,043,000 in prize money available on this card. Head below for our free Santa Anita Park picks for October 1, 2021.
Post Time: 2:30 p.m. PST
Race 4 covers 7 furlongs on the dirt for a $31,000 purse. Consider looking at P R Radio Star and California Street in this spot. They should both have good wins and be close at the wire.
P R Radio Star is 10 for 38 in his career, and has finished 3rd, 2nd, 6th, 3rd in his last four attempts. He looked good on May 14 to place 2nd, but hasn’t won since going in on August 2, 2020 at Del Mar.
P R Radio Star has picked up some prize money here and there in the top-3 since then though. He placed 2nd behind Hold Me Black by a haf length in a $54,200 event on May 14.
In his most recent outing, he showed 3rd for a $39,000 purse on August 21. Down to $31,000, P R Radio Star commands respect.
California Street is 3 for 18 in his career, and has finished 2nd, 1st in his last two attempts. He placed 2nd behind Itsthattime by 5 ¼ lengths in a $24,000 event, and then did one better for a 2 ¾ length win for a $28,000 purse.
California Street is going to have some company in the stretch, but should have enough to pull this one out.
Race 6 – Chandelier Stakes
Post Time: 3:30 p.m. PST
Distance:1 1/16 Miles
The $200,000 Chandelier Stakes (Gr. 2) covers 1 1/16 miles on the dirt this afternoon. Ain’t Easy and Grace Adler should be in the mix in this event. Ain’t Easy had a strong debut on August 21 at Del Mar.
She beat Infinite Empire by 5 ¼ lengths in a $70,000 event as a rookie. That was an impressive run from Ain’t Easy, but the terms of that one was too easy. She was running at only 5 ½ furlongs and the field wasn’t the toughest.
Ain’t Easy not only is going up in class, but the $400,000 filly is up in distance. Does she have what it takes to last? She should be close with a similar performance, but Grace Adler should be tough to beat.
Grace Adler is a perfect 2 for 2 and coming off a stakes win in the $300,000 Del Mar Debutante Stakes (Gr. 1) by 11 ¼ lengths. That was highly impressive.
The $700,000 Grace Adler has impressed in workouts as well leading up to this one. Grace Adler most recently completed 1:00.40 in 4 furlongs. If she wants to go she’s getting the win.
Race 8 – American Pharoah Stakes
Post Time: 4:29 p.m. PST
Distance:1 1/16 Miles
The American Pharoah Stakes (Gr. 1) is a $300,000 Breeders’ Cup event. Expect Rockefeller and Corniche to have a big presence in the stretch run.
Rockefeller is off to a good start with a 2 ¼ length win on August 28. That was a clean $70,000 win for Rockefeller, as he was in control from the early stages of that race.
He had to fight off some pressure late in the stretch, but held sway nicely. Rockefeller should be joined by a strong bid from Corniche.
Corniche is a one-time winner in one race as well. He beat Apprehend by 4 ¼ lengths in a comfortable win for a $70,000 purse. Corniche drew off easily and had no problems versus that field.
Expect more competition for Corniche, but a similar performance for Bob Baffert’s $1,500,000 colt should be more than enough to go back to the winner’s circle.
