Santa Anita Park Selections for February 21, 2021 – Horse Racing Picks

We will head out to Santa Anita Park in California for our second card of the day on Sunday. There are nine tracks offered at BetOnline today. If you don’t like Santa Anita Park or Aqueduct Racetrack, then there are several other options available for wagering. I’m going to stick with Aqueduct and Santa Anita, though.

The $20,000,000 Saudi Cup is in the books, with an upset written down and the Americans having to settle for 2nd, Charlatan, and Knicks Go, 4th. Mishriff had a bold effort to hold off Charlatan for the win. With the Saudi Cup wrapped up, the Road to the Kentucky Derby will heat up soon. It’s almost Derby season, as we’re only a month away from a 100-point race, with smaller races along the way.

Post Time: 1:03 p.m. PST
Distance:1 Mile

Seven horses are scheduled to run in this $31,000 event on the dirt. Lulumaru and Paige Runner will likely run a strong mile with a chance of winning. Lulumaru has been on fire in her last six entries. She’s finished in the top-3 in six straight performances, including top-2 in five out of six races and three wins.

In her most recent attempt, Lulumaru beat Destiny’s Journey by 4 ¼ lengths for a $22,000 purse. Following that effort, it was time for Lulumaru to jump up in class. She will head to tougher waters on Sunday in a race that should prove to be trickier. In any case, Lulumaru is likely going to be close at the wire and catching decent value on the morning-line.

Paige Runner is 5 for 21 in her career, and had three straight wins before watching that win streak snapped on January 17. In her latest win, Paige Runner beat Noble Contessa by 7 ¼ lengths in a blowout for a $36,000 purse. Paige Runner came back to finish 5th on January 17 in a $63,000 race. The class hike didn’t do any good, so it’s back down to a manageable level.

Race 6

(1) Swift Nonni
+800 (8/1)
(2) Respectfully
+800 (8/1)
(3) Maddie’s Mojito
+250 (5/2)
(4) Michalska
+400 (4/1)
(5) Big Stretch
+350 (7/2)
(6) Becca Taylor
+180 (9/5)

Post Time: 3:14 p.m. PST
Distance:6 Furlongs

Race 6 is a $63,000 event covering 6 furlongs on the dirt. Six horses are going to run, with Maddie’s Mojito and Becca Taylor likely going well in the stretch. Maddie’s Mojito is a one-time winner, going 9th and 1st in her career. She struggled as a rookie on August 23, finishing 9th in a $55,000 event. Maddie’s Mojito had early speed, and then faded away and weakened.

In her next performance, she won at Santa Anita Park after transferring there from Del Mar. She defeated Ensleyes Dream by 7 ¼ lengths in an impressive showing in a $61,000 event. That was a textbook win for Maddie’s Mojito, and showed off her full potential. Expect her to come close to a win again. Becca Taylor is a back-to-back winner on December 13 as a rookie in a $42,000 event by a head.

She was able to follow up on January 18 with a 1 ¼ length win in a $63,000 event. It’s hard to see Maddie’s Becca Taylor behind held out of the mix in the stretch in this race. That said, I’ve been really impressed by Maddie’s Mojito, and that 7 ¼ length win would be sufficient to top this field. Maddie’s Mojito will likely catch better value at post time.

Race 8 – Spring Fever Stakes

(1) Cassie Belle
+600 (6/1)
(2) Hotitude
+350 (7/2)
(3) Dr Wysong
+1000 (10/1)
(4) She’s a Dime
+600 (6/1)
(5) Hollywood Hills
+400 (4/1)
(6) Square Peggy
+500 (5/1)
(7) Bella Vita
+200 (2/1)

Post Time: 4:20 p.m. PST
Distance:6 Furlongs

Race 8 is the running of the $100,000 Spring Fever Stakes at Santa Anita Park. Hotitude and Bella Vita should have something to say in the stretch in this event. Hotitude is 4 for 14 in her career, and has been a bit inconsistent. She definitely has the talent to win, but which Hotitude is going to show up to run?

Hotitude has gone 8th, 2nd, 1st, 5th in her previous four outings. In her win on January 10, she beat Miss Fia by a neck in a $63,000 assignment. Hotitude came back on February 7 and finished 5th in a $65,000 event. That was disappointing, as she was expecting a better performance.

Bella Vita has been more of a consistent runner, going 2nd, 1st, 3rd, 2nd in four races in her career. She has always been close and never far away from a win. In the first win of her career, Bella Vita beat On Mars by 5 ¼ lengths in a $55,000 event on February 16.

That prompted a jump up to stakes racing, with an appearance in the $75,000 China Doll Stakes and $150,000 Evening Jewel Stakes most recently on May 16. It was a bold performance for Bella Vita in May. She came just a half length away from winning that event. Back after a layoff, expect Flavien Prat to guide her to a win on Sunday.
