Royal Ascot 2021 might be in the books, but there is plenty of racing on Sunday in North America. You can find 14 racecourses operating at BetOnline this afternoon and evening. If you’re looking for afternoon and twilight racing there’s both available. Mountaineer Park has the latest card on Sunday with post time scheduled for 7:00 p.m. EST.
I didn’t have any Ascot Racecourse picks yesterday, but there were some entertaining races on the card nevertheless. There are some big players racing on Sunday, and some of the not so big tracks going. I like playing both, but typically like to target the tracks that most people are interested in. Belmont Park has the biggest race on Sunday with the running of the $250,000 Poker Stakes (Gr. 3).
We have three selections, including the Poker Stakes, at TheSportsGeek this afternoon at Belmont Park. If you want the picks on Sunday head over to our Belmont Park page. Santa Anita Park has 11 races with $740,000 in prize money available. Head below for our free Santa Anita Park picks for June 20, 2021.
Post Time: 1:35 p.m. PST
Our card at Santa Anita Park opens with Race 2 for a $33,000 purse. Miss Alegria and Paid Informant are likely going to be tough runners to beat. Miss Alegria is 2 for 5 in her career going 4th, 5th, 1st, 1st, 6th. She won back-to-back performances on August 7 and October 10 in a $25,000 and $33,000 event.
In her most recent score, Miss Alegria defeated Brittle and Yoo by 1 ¾ lengths. That was a solid performance, but Miss Alegria couldn’t complete the hat-trick on November 8 at Del Mar. Miss Alegria faltered to 6th in a $59,000 event on November 8. That was a bit disappointing, but she is back down in class and should go well for the top prize here.
Paid Informant is a two-time winner in ten attempts, with a recent win two races back for a $36,000 purse on April 4. That was an easy 6 ¼ win over Majestic Gigi. Paid Informant failed to make it back-to-back wins, as she slipped to 4th in a $63,000 race. She didn’t show much kick against that competition and failed to keep pace. Back down to $33,000, expect a winning performance from Paid Informant.
Race 7 – American Stakes
Post Time: 4:21 p.m. PST
In Race 6, we have 11 horses scheduled to run 6 furlongs for a $22,000 purse in the American Stakes (Gr. 3). The presence of Restrainedvengence and Neptune’s Storm should loom large in the stretch run. Restrainedvengence is 8 for 30 in his career and some decent results recently.
He’s finished 2nd, 3rd, 3rd in his previous three trips, including the $250,000 San Francisco Mile Stakes (Gr. 3) and $300,000 Shoemaker Mile Stakes (Gr. 1). Most recently Restrainedvengence showed 3rd on May 31 in that $300,000 assignment. A performance like that certainly can’t be ignored, and I think you have to give him some consideration to win this outing.
Neptune’s Storm was the winner of the $250,000 San Francisco Mile on June 14, 2020. He finished ahead of Restrainedvengence easily, with a win over Kiwi’s Dream by a head. Since last year, Neptune’s Storm finished 3rd in the $200,000 Eddie Read Stakes (Gr. 2) on July 26, and then 4th most recently in the $750,000 Tourist Mile Stakes. That was a bit too tough, but this presents a winnable chance. Look for him to hold off a big bid from Restrainedvengence.
Race 8 – Fasig-Tipton Debutante Stakes
Post Time: 4:54 p.m. PST
The Debutante Stakes is a 5-furlong $100,000 event featuring a small field of five runners. It only takes a couple of scratches to get this race down to three competitors in an all-out sprint. This is likely a race between Munny Penny and At the Spa. Munny Penny is getting some fairly decent value in this event for what he is going to provide.
He is a one-time winner in two races, not a bad strike rate of 50%. Munny Penny has placed 2nd and a win in his most recent outing on May 28. She finished 7 lengths behind At the Spa in her debut on May 7, and then responded with a 5 ½ length win for a $61,000 purse on May 28. Does that race indicate she’s ready to compete against At the Spa in a $100,000 assignment?
At the Spa’s only outing was the 7 length win over Munny Penny for a $61,000 purse. That was incredibly impressive, and I think At the Spa more than deserves a trip up in class to a stakes race after that showing. Not bad at all for a $37,000 horse. She has continued to look strong in morning workouts as well. I’d certainly give At the Spa plenty of respect to win the Debutante Stakes.
